Have any of you guys gotten a D or F (in high school) and gotten into USC?

I am a sophomore in high school and here are my classes/grades

0 AP Art History- A
1. AP European History-A-
2. Algebra 2H- D-/F
3. Spanish 2H- A+
4. Chemistry- A+
5. P.E.- A
6. English 2H- A+

I'm really freaking out. I tried so hard and got two private tutors for math and I have perfect in all aspects of the course except the test. The semester is ending in six weeks and I have a D- right now. I'm trying to bring it up to a C- so I don't have to retake it, and I plan on switching to regular Algebra 2 second semester (I got an A+ in regular Geometry freshman year) This class really opened my eyes and made me realize honors math isn't like an honors history or english at all, and it's way too much for me to handle.

I really want to go to USC preferably the Marshall school, but would my math situation prevent me from getting in? I think I've worked so hard in my other classes and I'm hoping that would balance things out if I end up with a C-

Try getting in contact with and build rapport with an admissions officer on campus, a local influential alumni, or a local USC admissions representative. The rest of your grades are As so if you transfer to regular Algebra 2 next semester and do well, the admissions committee will realize it was a misplacement to begin with. Good luck!

I suggest the OP look into the Math requirement at Marshall. I don’t know how Math prep is regarded at Marshall. Do you have strong Math scores on the SAT and SAT II?

Actually, yes.

I got in with a D+ junior year in AP US History. But here’s why I think I still got in (fall freshman admission):

 • Previous grades were all mostly A’s and some B’s (all Honors)
 • Next semester I raised my D+ to a B-
 • Senior Year I got straight A’s (all AP classes)
 • SAT, EC’s, leadership roles, volunteer, GPA (one D def won’t kill it)

Basically, this has to be a ONE-time uncharacteristic thing and you should probably excelling in your EC’s as well. Raise it as much as possible, and then do BETTER next semester, no matter what. Get a tutor, etc. Since you have the rest A’s and have taken the Honors Track, you seem like you can pull this off. Whatever you do, DON’T go telling yourself you’ve ruined your high school career and that no good colleges will accept you. I did that and was horribly depressed for a few months, when in the end, it was all in vain.

Does it even have any impact if you re-take it?

so does that mean I should stay in this class? I was planning on hopefully getting a C- and leaving the class for good so I could get an A+ in regular Algebra 2. I really don’t want to risk me failing so I’d have to retake it over the summer because I planned to do an internship program, after I took Spanish 3 in summer school (for advancement, so I could jump straight to AP junior year)

and the teacher said that 2nd semester is almost twice as hard because of the harder concepts integrated into the course, so I’m scared that I’d not even be able to get a D. The thing is I have A’s in every part of the class (Problem of the Week, homework, classwork assignments, participation) and I fail the tests epicly, which are 75% of the grade

I really really regret taking this course :frowning: I just wanted to show colleges I could challenge myself and exceed but I don’t think this course would let me.

I would do everything you can to get into that regular math class. Its obvious that this current one was an misplacement for you. Which is OK…not everyone has to be a math person! Good luck!

thanks, next semester I think I’ll be switching out for sure. I can’t take it anymore !

I actually graduated highschool with a 2.8 (and my fair share of D’s and C’s)

Unfortunately at the time I lacked motivation and forsight. I failed to see the value of education.

Anyways, if all else fails, you can do what I did. I did 1 year at another 4 year institution and got a 4.0. This in conjunction with my high SAT score (2240) is probably what got me into USC for my sophomore year.

i got a D in Trigonometry and i got accepted to USC. and you prob have more honors/ap’s then i did. and my sat was pretty medicore
u should be fine dont stress

princekarim - what program are you in?

really? I’m on the verge of an F right now because of the last test :[ I’m making up for this low grade by taking regular precalc next year and 5 AP classes that I know I can pass with an A in… would that draw less attention to my D? I’m so nervous and scared for my future

My D had a low GPA from HS & did exceptionally well her 1st semester of local community college, applied as a transfer & got in as a January, sophomore transfer. She did pretty well for the 3 semesters of CC & was able to transfer in many credits, saving us a lot of $$.
