crazed, I do think that UB’s communications policy needs tweaking as well. I’ve had mixed experiences - fairly good, but slow to respond, with dept/advisor to totally no response from Disability Services (and yes, this was the person/email/phone number that I was told to contact). It does leave a poor impression when one must constantly hound for a bit of info - feels like the weak kid in gym class silently praying “pick me”! Now we’re left in a situation where the advisor is expecting us to follow up with a dept that will not respond. Sigh…now she’ll have to figure it out when she goes for orientation but was hoping to avoid shlepping volumes of medical records along.

MPM, personal comments are inappropriate. Crazed and any other poster is free to discuss problems they’re experiencing…busy parents also deserve to get a little respect in exchange for their tuition dollars, imo. And let’s not forget that UB is a taxpayer funded institution as well.

Thanks so much sk8rmom. Glad you understand me and stop the over-reacting!!!
The communication can be frustrating, but in your case is so much more important. Hope you get things worked out shortly.

I think the kids tend to be so protective of their schools they don’t want to acknowledge anything less than perfection. Hopefully, before we know it, we Mom’s will have our kids all set up and then the kids get to take over. My son is way too shy to make contact at this point, by phone call anyway.

My son applied to many schools (2 different majors) and accepted to all. Picked UB which was a safety for him. As soon as he made up his mind and deposits were made, he has become so psyched about attending UB. It’s great to see him like this. (He turned down some very good and popular schools due to UB’s reputation in engineering. Close educationally, or better ranked for engineering. Turned down Binghamton, Syracuse, VaTech, Delaware, RIT and others, most with merit offers.)

Getting back to more important things and what this thread is hopefully for, can we continue to ask questions for to another and and hopefully some experienced students and parents as we prepare to shop and pack, ect. On my older son s thread, it is very used, and the students/parents provided great links as to what to buy, what not to buy, scheduling info, etc. It was a wealth of knowledge and provided great comfort.

So here goes… From the UB residence site photos, there does not seem to be a lot of closet, dresser space. What is suggested? Are all the beds adjustable to the top of the headboards to provide storage beneath? Any shelves above the desks for books? Any forced triples (a room for 2 made for 3) where they do not provide an extra desk and dresser? Saw a photo of a wardrobe which looks like it is added to a room without enough closets for the number of kids. Any suggestions on what to bring that we may not think of?

Crazed, I agree…glad the students are so happy at UB they can’t stand to hear a slight complaint. But I’m sure the admin there would be the first to say that there’s ALWAYS room for improvement in any institution.

On bed lofting…can’t tell you which part of the website it was on but the beds loft to 34 inches. It was in a ResLife handbook pdf file I think. Also noted in the same file that the fridge size is odd, 4.2 cf (the tall ones are typically 4.5). No idea if/how they check this.

My names Vanessa
I’m coming to Buffalo to study this fall and arrive 22nd august, i’m an international student from England and got the room assignment RIC 393A, its a double
Could you possibly tell me just how spacious the rooms are? and what are the communal bathrooms like? and how cheap is bedding over there? and when exactly does it get cold enough that i have to actually go an get winter clothing?

RIC is Richmond. Log on to your housing account and you should be able to see the room type.

Ellicott doubles aren’t bad space-wise.

Bedding will probably run $40-$70 depending on what you get.

Winter clothing…depends on what you’re used to. You’re going to want a sweatshirt or light jacket by October, but then again it can also be hot and humid then. By mid-to-late November it’s often in the 30’s, so you may want a jacket then.

There is a Target and a Bed Bath & Beyond store near UB’s North campus. BB&B generally has higher quality, but pricier, bedding. I strongly recommend a good foam mattress pad as the mattresses are covered in vinyl and are noisy and a bit stiff. You can order online and have it shipped to the store (or probably to UB after a certain date):

How many cable connections will be in a double room at Governors? It looks like we have a situation where DS and his roommate each want to bring a TV.

Governors rooms have a single coax cable connector, and they are located near the door.

If you plan on having two or more TV’s in the room, get a splitter (available at Target, Radioshack, even the Dollar Tree - that might be the cheapest).

If you plan on locating the TV(s) in the back of the room, you’ll want 20-25 feet of coax cable. This is usually the most popular, putting the TV’s on the dressers in the back of the room. You might also consider putting them on the desks if they are small enough - if that’s the case, you’ll likely need to wrap a cable around the room to get to the desk on the opposite side.

There are also two ethernet ports in each room for computers, in Governors these are located under the bed on the door side of the room - about two feet from the window. So you’ll need fairly long ethernet cables too - one roommate will need about 10’, the other about 20’. Don’t count on wireless - most of Governors does not have good wifi signal (generally the 209-212 suites are the only ones that can get it well).

Even though your son has probably made up his mind about bring his own TV, they are going to take up a lot of room in a Governor’s double. Those rooms are tiny! Between beds, desks and dressers, those TVs are going to take up a lot of room. Not to mention how annoying it will be trying to watch a show/movie when a person 5 feet away is trying to do the same thing. It may be too late to change plans about that now, but I can imagine a TV returning home in the near future :p

Also- to anybody reading this: buy an ethernet cable and television cable in your hometown- last year I searched everywhere for these and ended up buying cables that were way too long (and more $$) because that was all that was left at target/best buy/home depot/wal-mart

Has anyone received their Work Study Appointment form in the mail yet? Or a refund from UB? It seems like my D had received both by this time last year, but hasn’t received either so far…and no response from the SRC email sent several days ago:(
