Which Dorm...

What is the best building to select on the North campus in Ellicott for freshman? Seems like Richmond and Red Jacket? Will they allow Freshman in either of these with the new building being built for Sophmores?

Freshmen are normally housed in Richmond, Spaulding and Wilkeson. I believe Red Jacket is completely upper-classmen…unless they’re changing that next year! Richmond is nice because it has a dining hall and is close to the tunnel. Spaulding is good and housed the LLC’s the year my D was a freshman. Wilkeson is at the far end and has/had old heaters (not wall thermostats) last year which were kind of a pain, says my D. Truly, they’re all part of the same complex and there isn’t a huge difference!

Unless the process has changed since I was a freshman, I don’t think that you can select which building you are placed in. I recall being able to give a preference on the type of room (single, double, etc.) and which dorm complex you prefer.

Ultimately, it doesn’t really matter. All the freshman dorm buildings in Ellicott are very similar. The heat is always on too high, there is usually a similar amount of activity, and the bathrooms are the same. The only real differences are because of the building’s location in the complex

Housing options questions:

1) **Double/B. Does the size of the rooms really vary?

2) **Large Double/Large Double **- How much larger are they? They don’t have pictures… Is it worth it, or just get the Double?

3) **Large Double **- Do they have just a Large Double? This is not listed on the application.

Thanks for any help on rooms!

The doubles in Ellicott really do vary. My kid had a single w/double (she was in the double), and it was huge…almost as bit as the triple she has this year, and the foyer had 3 closets and room enough for a rug, chair, and some storage. Don’t remember if you can request those or not, but if so that would be my recommendation. I haven’t seen any doubles that I would classify as small in Ellicott (I think some of the Governors doubles are quite small). The beds loft quite high, so there’s tons of storage room beneath them.

When are sign ups for housing?

You can select housing now if you paid tuition/housing deposit AND they mailed you a letter with a new id to login. I was early decision, and just got my new Id on Monday.

For both Govenors and Ellicott i saw that the bathrooms weren’t placed in each room like the ones on the south campus. I saw this based on the floor plans off the UB site, could anyone verify if this is true or not? It might be personal preference but i dont enjoy sharing a bathroom with potentially 8 other people ^_^

Yes, the bathrooms in the freshman dorms (well I can really only confirm Goodyear - the biggest freshman dorm on South) on south campus are shared between two double rooms. The bathrooms in the dorms on north campus are shared by the whole hall.

To be honest, I have never met anybody who was completely dissatisfied with their bathroom situation in the dorms. Keep in mind, the Goodyear bathrooms have 1 toilet and one shower, while the bathrooms in the north campus dorms have 2 toilets and 2 showers. In my 2 years in the dorms, I had to wait for a shower/toilet maybe 2 times.

In Governors, you share a bathroom with your hallway, but that’s only 4 rooms. So 8 people (you and 7 others). With 2 toilets/sinks/showers in the bathroom, it’s not bad at all. I’m in my 4th semester in Governors and can count the number of times I’ve had to wait for a shower on one hand. It’s not an issue at all.

How are the dorms on south campus? Is Goodyear an all-freshman dorm? If I go to UB I want to be closer to the city but I dont want to be a little freshman stuck with a ton of upperclassmen and not get the “freshman experience”
