So here’s the story, From 2007-20010 I was too young to apply on my own for fafsa and my parents made too much money. I took 130 units under two degrees, one of my degrees was cancelled, so I took my other degree and left the junior college. I never had Fafsa.
3 years later I want to return and complete the transfer requirements to go to a university. But now they tell me I have exceeded the unit requirements!!!
I have no clue how to write an appeal for this. I have been given 3 days to try this!
I guess one thing you could talk about was why you took 130 units towards two degrees and are coming back for a third (?) degree. How many college classes have you taken? How did one of your college degrees get cancelled?
You could also talk about your goals for the future. Do you have a realistic plan to finish college at this stage? They might be concerned that you’re “spinning your wheels” and not making any progress. If you had a concrete goal in mind and a reasonable plan to get it accomplished they might be more willing to bend the rules for you.
You may have to self pay and take the prerequisites you need. Then when you transfer and are again on a 4 year degree program, you should be eligible again. Are you sure you can’t get into the 4 year directly where you may start the clock again? In any case, aid will stop being allowed at 180 credits, so it seems smarter to self pay the CC cheaper classes before you transfer. How did you amass so many credits and not have the transfer requirements is a head scratcher. An appeal might be granted for change of major or something but don’t count on it.
Do you have 130 credits from a JUNIOR college? Were you just taking classes randomly? That sounds like more than 2 degree plans in lower division classes.
Originally I was taking a degree path in culinary arts and restaurant management. Then the school started losing funding and many of my classes went on rotation where they would alternate semesters when they were given.
In order to stay on my parents medical insurance I had to take 12 units a semester.
The basic degree in humanities is pretty much the basic general ed withe a few more art classes thrown in. That total was 42 units . (I was trying to fulfill my requirements to transfer) my plan was to take the less expensive classes at the jc and take the majors at the uni.
The culinary needed 50 units before transfer. .
There were some semesters where I took 18 units to keep up so I wouldn’t lose a class in the budget cuts.
When I got to the final stages of my culinary degree they shut down the internship program putting my degree on suspension for a year.
During that year I fought to get the program. And to finish up my last classes and had to take fillers.
When the program came back it filled up instantly and I was unable to get in. This happened twice before I decided to take the AA in humanities and leave so not to pay for MORE classes . I was 1 class short of transferring to a uni.
The reason I didn’t leave before was so I wouldn’t lose my 2007 college rights
I paid for everything though. I worked three jobs and barely slept. I couldn’t get aide because they said my parents made to much. And 5 hey didn’t care that they were sending my brother to a university at the same time .
I just need 1 math class at the college I am at to transfer to a university.
Even though I have the BOG fee waiver, my left over class cost is $75. And I have 3 books I need to buy totaling $400 that I just don’t have right now.
I want to get a BS in business in the field of finance and the university is the school I need to go to for that. If I don’t get financial aide then I definitely cannot transfer
And my parents again cannot help because they are putting my youngest sister through a university.
It isn’t about ‘caring’ or not, it is about federal guidelines for who gets a Pell Grant. It is strictly by formula. Not much more is available at a CC than a Pell Grant. You are also entitled to a student loan.
All you can do is write the circumstances in the appeal. But the most you can get for the CC is the Pell Grant, whatever portion you are eligible for. Are you sure you are eligible for any now?
But if you have only one class to transfer, then don’t waste your Pell on that. Just pay for it. Or see if the transfer can be affected anyway.
