Have You Had A Chaffle? :)

What’s junky about eggs and cheese? They are loaded with protein as well as having some important vitamins and nutrients. And not all of us need to watch calories!

IMO eggs aren’t worrisome from a nutritional standpoint. Cheese in moderation is fine, but the amount of cheese alone in the chaffle recipe would have close to 2 days worth of saturated fat - the kind that increases risk of heart disease. Skinny people can get heart disease, too. I don’t have a weight issue so am not concerned with the calories, but am concerned about that amount of saturated fat all in one bomb.

Saturated fat is no longer considered unhealthy. I eat it with reckless abandon and my cholesterol and heart health are phenomenal. (I’m also a distance runner, which helps keep the old ticker in line.)

Saturated fat is still only recommended in moderation.

I’m a pretty healthy eater. But I don’t aim to never have delicious food that is 100 calories or less. A chaffle is an example of a breakfast - or lunch - or dinner - splurge.

Just like a cream soup, a donut, a few french fries, or a grilled cheese sandwich.

1 egg - 80 calories
1/2 cup shredded cheese - ca. 250 calories (about 2 oz or 2 slices)
1 T almond flour - 45 calories

It is actually not THAT high calorie.

I don’t have a waffle iron but am interested to try this. Has anyone made the batter and then fried it like a pancake?

I’m making chili for dinner…and this sounds like it would be great with the chili…and I have all the ingredients!!

It sounds like it might be really good with chili. The saturated fat concerns could be reduced if the waffle were divided amongst 2 (or 4) people.

Dh tried it today and said it was pretty good. He only ate half, so two of the four pieces our waffle maker creates. He made the recipe using almond flour. I’ll give it a try later this week.

I was surprised - 1/2 cup of cheddar cheese is only 228 calories. 1 egg is 78 calories. 1 Tb flour is 28 calories. (or 45 calories if you use almond flour.) Total is 334. You are probably going to want a vegetable to go with. But you are still looking at a pretty reasonable amount for a meal. I’m not seeing this as junk food.

I mentioned this at a boutique breakfast place I dined at this morning. The waitress went to talk to the chef and both said they’d look it up as it sounded intruiging.

With chili sounds like a great idea! One of things most often mentioned about the Chaffle is how filling it is. 1/2 of our 4 section waffle maker was perfectly satisfying to me!

Seems like it would taste like scrambled egg with cheese or a cheese omelette, perhaps with different proportions of egg and cheese and in a different shape.

Waffles can be fun because of the crunch on the outside.

^^^I would not think of either of those when eating it. It’s firm and crispy. You don’t really taste the egg. The two more dominant traits are the cheese flavor and the texture of a crisp flour based waffle - even though there is such a small amount of flour.

An egg+cheese+tiny amount to almond flour sounds pretty fun and tasty. Wonder when they’ll start selling them in frozen waffle section. I’d be interested in trying one.

Making one is literally a 10 minute or less time investment. Plug in the waffle maker, mix up the 3 ingredients in less than two minutes while the waffle maker gets hot, 2-3 minutes once poured in the waffle maker. You can make your coffee or get your juice while it’s cooking!

Yes, I have. I can’t say I love it, but it’s a great option and allows for creativity. I even bought the Dash Mini waffle maker for $10 to make them in, since it seems all the online chafflers are using it.
