Have you put a standard twin fitted sheet on an XL mattress?

I'm looking for advice from people who have actually tried putting a standard twin fitted sheet on a twin XL mattress. How well did it work? Would you do it again?

I know that the standard twin fitted sheet is 75" long, and the standard twin XL mattress is 80" long. (The mattresses at my daughter's college are 78"). I also know that the college mattresses tend to be thinner than mattresses at home. Please don't speculate in this thread about how well you THINK it would work . . . I'm really looking for empirical evidence.

Thanks!

Our D had two sets of sheets. One set was XL purchased at Target and the other was from Lands End. The Lands End flannels worked very well. The deep pockets compensated for the fact that they were not XL.

My kid found the XL sheets a bit loose, took twins back to school- and they didn’t reach. (Ie, the top of the corner seam doesn’t reach the top corner of the bed. Deep pockets “may” compensate. Or may not.) Trick to get a good deal is shop now- Target and WalMart.

I also found a nice set of XL twin (300 count) at jcpenny.com for $20 (free shipping at the time, too).

If they are for DEEP mattresses and especially if they have elastic all the way around and not just at the corners, they work. A twin XL is longer but narrower. And our experience is they are likely NOT DEEP.

Lots of new XL sets and sheets at Bed Bath and Beyond. And lots of 20% off coupons.

The regular twin jerzee sheets fit fine. But they get all stretched out weird.

Yes, I have gotten old, stretched out jersey sheets (twin sized) to fit a twin xl bed. However, the fitted sheet did not work with a mattress topper. (The pockets on the fitted sheet weren’t particularly deep.)

I have had twin xl sheets that wouldn’t stay on the bed, because the pockets were too deep.

Go figure.

I get twin XL (non flannel, non jerzey) sheets from Bed, Bath, & Beyond. I know it’s an item that won’t be needed after their 4 years in college, (and assuming they’ll stay in a dorm all those years) but hey, why that’s why I’m buying it, right? I found that they definitely needed to have XL sheets to allow for the extra toppers: egg grate + mattress pad. In fact, I told my kids to toss the sheets when they pack up that last time.

And sell most of their college textbooks. Don’t want those either, even though they were a lot more money.

Speaking of textbooks, my older one started using the rental service for classes not in her major. Great deal. I think she said, better than buying and later selling them back.

I showed up to college with my standard twin sheets, never having heard of an XL twin. There was no hope of getting the fitted sheet to stay on, so I ended up tucking the topsheet around the mattress.

My best friend tried to use twin sheets her freshman year and it didn’t work out for her. The XL sheets are worth the expense because they will fit (besides, as mentioned above, stores like Target will have sales on these sheets before the semester begins and they will be even cheaper).

I saw twin XL fitted sheets at boscovs for 7.99

http://www.boscovs.com/StoreFrontWeb/Product.bos?rch=Y&quantity=1&itemNumber=28555

Thanks for the helpful comments. I’m not at all worried about finding XL sheets . . . I’ve seen plenty at BBB and Target. It’s just that the sheets my daughter really likes don’t come in XL, and we were wondering if they would suffice.

Check to make sure the college really does use only XL mattresses. At some schools, they are not in fact standard.

TJ Maxx and Homegoods just got in a large shipment of XL twin sheet sets, along with XL comforter sets. Was there yesterday.

Kat

My D’s school also has the 78" mattress and the school’s website indicates that regular twin sheets will work. I don’t know if that’s true, but the mattress is thinner than a regular mattress, and all their materials indicate that regular sheets work. Perhaps you could call your school’s housing office.

We did get a pretty thick mattress topper, however, so we went with the xl sheets, just to be safe.

Kohl’s, Pottery Barn’s and many on-line outlets have XL’s. There is not way to put regular lengtrh on XL, except, if you cut it at one end and insert addtional peice. I have done it also and it is very easy, I just gut some piece from flat sheet, cut thru the width of fitted sheet right before the fitted portion and attached (inserted) the cut out piece.

BTW, D. has always used mattress toppers, she has permanent sholder injury, has to have toppers. XL fitted on XL mattress with 2 toppers worked just fine.

Standard bottom did not fit my d’s XL twin. To OP - your daughter might consider buying an inexpensive set of XL sheets in a solid color that matches her favoirte twin sheets. She could then use her favorite twin flat and pillowcasess.

(As aside - we ordered a memory foam topper from Costco. It was a great decision and made her bed “so comfortable”. However, we are able to drive her to school. It would be a pain to try to ship back and forth…)
