Hey

So basically I really would like to go to USC but finances seem to not want to permit it. Basically I need about 15-20k if I am to attend. I was a Spring Admit if that changes things. Has anyone else not gotten their FA package? If I haven't gotten it by now - does that mean I'm not getting any aid?

Im a fall admit, and even I didnt recieve my package… and I too need 20k to attend…

Nilufer,
Please contact the financial aid office. At this late date I suggest calling as you are a fall admit. Perhaps the packet was lost in the mail.

If you cannot make it through to the office try calling the admissions office for the school you will enter such as Viterbi, Marshall or another. Perhaps someone there could assist you.

Did you fill out all the necessary forms and have them sent to the financial aid office by the deadline?

JocularMango, you posted that you submitted your tax returns late and so that is probably what is holding up your package. Calling or emailing to ask is a very good idea at this point. Remember that as a Spring admit you have until June 1st to decide where you will attend.

nilufer, as i recall, you submitted your CSS/Profile about a month and a half late. As I have mentioned before, you might not have the information before May 1st. Call to ask when you can expect it. If it will be a week or more it might be a good idea to start requesting extensions NOW on your commitment deposits from schools you still are considering attending, including USC (they will not assume you need an extension).

^ Note to JocularMango on the above - Spring admits have until June 1st to commit to USC, but you will need to either request extensions from other schools you are still considering or make a deposit to one of them while you wait for your USC financial aid information if it hasn’t been received by May 1st. (I wasn’t very clear when I said June 1st.)

We haven’t gotten my daughter’s either and she’s a fall admit and everything was on time. Last week when I called they said a few days and yesterday when I called they said by the end of the week. Do you think we need to start trying to get extensions from other schools?

If you had everything in on time, they will make your package a priority and it would probably be safe to wait until about the 25th to request extensions. (And don’t forget to request one from USC as well!) You only need to request them from the school(s) you would choose if you find the financial aid is not sufficient at USC - not all schools that accepted you.

Good luck!

So I just got my FA package this morning online, but I have no idea what it means. I did not get any awards, does that mean need based FA?

Now I got to the FA summary page and it says my COA is 27,

So I just got my FA package this morning online, but I have no idea what it means. I did not get any awards, does that mean need based FA?

Now I got to the FA summary page and it says my COA is 27,939, then it says I get about a $2000 dollar Federal Unsubsidized Loan and the estimated amount covered by my family is $25,000. Now I’m assuming thats a good thing, except I looked at estimating my family’s contribution - and I am unsure whats going on. I put up printscreens on Flickr, can anyone help?

Well, first off, note that your package would likely be different if you were a fall admit because your total COA would be 54k rather than 27k as a spring admit.

Basically, based on your FAFSA and documents submitted, your family can afford 25k worth towards your education. That’s almost the whole thing. USC is allowing you to take a loan (that must be payed back eventually) to cover the remaining balance of 2-3k.

To spell it out, USC gave you NOTHING.

binks09 is correct, JocularMango, your aid consists of an unsubsidized Stafford of $2,750. (It would be $5,500 if you were attending the full year.) You and your family are responsible for the remaining $25,000 ($50,000 for full-year attendance).

According to an earlier post of yours
you are not eligible for Federal aid other than unsubsidized loans. As your FAFSA EFC equals the cost of attendance at USC (and the information from the CSS/Profile generally increases your contribution), you are also not eligible for USC grants.

The formula used to calculate aid is:

Cost of attendance - expected contribution = need

According to that formula you do not show need. Do you have more affordable options available to choose from?

Thanks so much for your help!

Thanks so much for your help Alamemom and Georgia Girl,

My documents were a month late and last friday they FA office requested 5 additional forms. We completed everything with my dad (he at least helped this time!) and then submitted everyting online on sunday. When I called last week and asked whether if i could get my package before may 1st, the officer assured me that I’d recieve. its already 21st of april and im not considering any other school, i was considering penn state but they only gave 11k.so its down to two options: its either USC or a university at my home country…

I’m in the same position. Granted I turned my documents in late (VERY late!), but I’ve been calling the office every now and then. First time I was told it’d be up by April 16th, then the 19th, then I was told it should be up yesterday… And then the lady told me today to just expect it before May 1st, which if the trend continues will not happen. Very frustrating considering even though I know the approximate sums my parents would be happy with paying, I know they will still argue over a 3k-5k difference since it adds up over 4 years… Should I just assume the worst? lol

First, a short rant:

While I am sure it frustrating for you to have to wait for your financial aid information, I am sure it was just as frustrating for the financial aid office to have to wait and wait for you to turn in your documents “very late.” And then to have the students who turned documents and applications in late calling up complaining that they need their packages before *their *May 1st deadline must also be frustrating when those same students ignored USC’s deadlines.

Rant over (for now).

Now to answer your “assume the worst” question: It is likely USC will award you all the aid for which you qualify despite your late documents. You may have to ask for extensions from USC and others schools you are still considering or make a deposit to a school you know you can afford in the meantime if it turns out you do not have the information by May 1st.

Good luck!

I am inclined to agree with you alamemom… I am one of the “very late” financial document(ers) and so it is a bit nerve wracking waiting on the package but the way my other schools looked with finances I figured USC would give me the best package so I enrolled anyway… Now I don’t have to worry about the May 1st deadline and so I’ve kinda toned down the stress a bit… But yes, kids who have submitted documents late should be more lenient on the financial aid department on when they give award notifications as they are infinitesimally more busy than us humble folk… Plus now they have to start working on getting financial aid for the three other grades (that amounts to triple the number of kids who they are reviewing now) so keep it all in perspective…

I am a spring admit and basically got the same thing as JocularMango, but my efc on the fafsa was 30,000. Would my parents have to pay 54,000 if I was moved to the fall? I was wondering how that works because 54,000 dollars is a lot of money
