Haverford or Colgate

I'm so confused about which LAC I should go~
I'm an international student~major in economics

Haverford: cross-register in Swathmore, BMC, Penn(including Wharton)
Colgate: strong alumni network in finance and business

Nobody replies???

Plz help me!

That’s a tough one. You really can’t lose. At one school, you get an intensely personal education. And yet, I’ll bet the connections really are strong for Colgate–also a fine school. How do you feel about larger v. smaller?

Very, very different environments. Haverford is a small LAC and is close to a city and city amenities. D3 sports. Colgate is beautiful but isolated. Lots of activities on campus, though. Big Greek scene and very preppy. It’s D1 sports (Patriot League). I love them both, but they are really quite different.

Haverford has Quaker roots (which translates into very inclusive, very tolerant, very open to alternative lifestyles, probably quite liberal politically), very small school. Because it is in a city, with other schools near by, it would give you more options both academically and socially.
Colgate is bigger but still a very supportive environment. Lots of snow and cold in Colgate although the students say it doesn’t bother them. All social activities are school associated. The town is cute but small.

If you want the finance/business, I would choose Colgate over Haverford.

Unless the Greek scene, preppy, Div I culture is attractive to you, I think Haverford is the superior choice.

Haverford offers an undergraduate education that is truly outstanding and the intellectual environment is as rigorous, serious, and stimulating as one will find anywhere.

Colgate may have a strong network in finance and business but Haverford certainly does as well. There are plenty of HC grads on Wall Street, this point hardly worth mentioning…

Although not directly business itself, I think it’s sort-a interesting that both the current economics editor of the Wall Street Journal and the chief editor of The Harvard Business Review are Haverford grads. I think that supports that a HC education can give you a great start to understanding economic and business principles … how you want to apply that then (academics, journalism or actual business) depends not on your education but rather your personality and life goals.

As a practical matter, travel to Philadelphia and Haverford will be MUCH easier by air. It’s only 30 minutes or so from the airport. Plus, you have easy and inexpensive rail or bus travel to Philadelphia, NYC, Baltimore, Washington, and dirt-cheap airfares to anywhere in the United States – Boston, Atlanta, Miami, Chicago, California.

At Colgate you have to connect to Syracuse or Albany and then you are still an hour or more from campus. Basically, if you don’t have a car, you aren’t going anywhere easily.

I don’t know where you live, but this is a signficant consideration, assuming that you would like to enjoy some of what the United States has to offer.

Colgate is larger but I can also take advantage of the cross-registration policy of Haverford. I don’t really think that the size is the most important criteria.

katytibbs~
I know that Colgate has a strong econ program. But as an international student, do you think is better to go to Haverford for its diverse and inclusive enviornment?

Does anyone know about the cross-registration? Are there any requirements or restrictions when the students choose courses in other colleges?
