I’m currently planning to apply to Haverford College for the Fall of 2020. I would have applied early decision but my parents did not want me to be bound to go. In light of this, I found out today that some one else from my school was accepted early decision to Haverford for the same year. Knowing that Haverford is a very small, selective school, will my chances of being accepted be worse since someone else from my school was already accepted? To make it even more difficult, I’m from a Philadelphia suburb.
Haverford enrolled just 38 students from Pennsylvania in 2019, so while colleges tend to deny the existence of quotas across high schools, it may be slightly more challenging. However, being from a Philadelphia suburb definitely ensures that Haverford is familiar with your high school’s quality and rigor, which may help you if your high school is high-achieving.
How does your profile compare to your classmate who was accepted in ED? Fairly or not, many colleges directly compare applicants from the same high schools.
My profile is likely very similar to his. We would have similar gpa/grades and rank and extracurriculars are relatively the same, but he focused more heavily on sports, such as track. He did not get recruited though. My standardized test scores are probably slightly lower than his, but I would say I have more leadership roles. I am the president of an environmental club that I founded last year and the captain of our school’s quiz bowl team. His profile may be slightly stronger in comparison, but I’m going to make sure my essays are top notch.
Couldn’t find a relevant RD thread…wondering based on previous years posts about notifications via snail mail: does anyone know whether international students get notified by Haverford via snail mail as well? USPS takes forever to reach us in the UK!
