Looking to compare these two schools...

Both are excellent colleges. One key differences would be location (Haverford’s access to Philadelphia). Also, Hamilton has a vibrant Greek life (many would say they dominate the social scene). On the other hand, Haverford has no frats or sororities, and it would be considered heretical to even suggest it! While both are elite and incredibly well-regarded, I think Haverford has the upper hand in reputation. Haverford has made a more significant commitment to financial aid: Haverford is need-blind, promise to meet the full demonstrated need, and does not include loans in their aid packages. I think this also speaks to the values of the College and their willingness to put extensive resources into financial aid.

Also, Haverford is a very academic place. Haverford produces a significant number of PHDs. For example in the social sciences, humanities, and sciences. Haverford is among the top 5 undergraduate schools for those who receive PH.Ds (when adjusted to equalize size). Comparatively Hamilton is about 87. Don’t get me wrong Hamilton is great even on this score (ahead of Vanderbilt, Washington University, UCLA, UMichigan, and others). But Haverford’s standing on this score is sky high.

I agree with this excerpt from College ******* about Haverford: “Haverford is unique….Academically, the school has a spirit of reflective intellectualism that discourages students from becoming too detached from the real world. Social relations are guided by honor and civility. The student body generally has a sense of purpose and perspective and knows how to relax while tackling a challenging school curriculum. Granted, Haverford is not for everyone. Extreme partiers will not be happy here, nor will those who have no thirst for learning.”

My advice:

Random trivia: Hamilton’s chief academic officer (dean of the faculty) is a Haverford graduate.

Thank you for your post. Having visited both, I could picture myself at either, and really hope for the best during the admissions process. I will certainly check out the videos.
