Haverford waiting list

Hello, my son was waitlisted from Haverford
Stats:
1500 SAT
Math II subject test 760
Chem Subj test 710
Calc AP 5
Econ AP 5
Chem AP 4
Expecting to get good scores on upcoming AP tests as well
Very rigorous curriculum with a 4.6 weighted GPA
Small private school
What is his chance of being admitted? That was totally his dream school… please advice if anyone actually got off wait list?

I don’t believe they pulled from the waitlist last year, but this year is gonna be a whole new curve for every school, I think.

Last year Haverford accepted 15 of the 924 (1…6%) applicants who accepted a place on its waiting list. Since your son appears highly qualified for admission and obviously maintains a sincere interest in Haverford, you can hope for better odds. Wishing him the best of luck!

Scorpio40,
My daughter was also waitlisted at Haverford.
(Her profile is v similar to your son’s!)
By the end of the search process, she decided Haverford was her top school…
but she didn’t realize this in time to apply ED.
My heart breaks a little for her–
(and of course she’s kicking herself for not applying ED.)
Her college advisor was surprised she didn’t get in because it seemed like such a perfect fit.
Unfortunately, it sure doesn’t sound like the chances of getting off the waitlist are very high! Where else did your son apply?

He applied to UPenn, and we just found out that he was denied
But our councelor was so confident that he’d get in Haverford that we did not do ED… he did not do ED anywhere because he wanted to have all his options open…
How about your daughter? Where else did she apply?

Sorry about Penn! (Though I went there myself and I’m not sure I would have chosen such a big school if I had to do it again…) Does he have other options yet?
My daughter’s counselor was also confident she’d get in to Haverford–
so maybe that added to her disappointment??
She did get into Brandeis with a merit scholarship, which is probably where she’ll go…
(assuming she doesn’t get off Haverford wait list?)
Rejected from Amherst (which was disappointing, but I think their acceptance rate for RD is in the single digits… so she knew it was a longshot!)
My daughter felt the same about ED, and unfortunately none of her schools offered early action. It’s a humbling process!

Has anyone gotten off the waitlist? I saw that some kids from other LAC are getting off waitlists now and it’s not May yet!

Everything that people have known in the past about waitlists is thrown out the window this year. Folks in college administrations expect some amount of chaos/uncertainty due to COVID-19. A not neglible number of high school seniors are considering gap years, in case schools are still on-line in August. A number of others are not willing to travel as far to go to school in case there is a back and forth with campus openings.

Some larger schools are trying to make up for this uncertainty by admitting slightly more students. Smaller LAC’s like Haverford are limited in their ability to do this, as they would be in trouble if too many students said “yes.”

All schools are talking to parents and students a lot right now, and if I were in your situation, I would absolutely call the admissions office for guidance.

(I work in higher ed, but not at Haverford)

No word yet…

@Scorpio40 Any news from Haverford?

Anyone else receive an email titled “Remain Active on the Waiting List?”. It asked me to respond to the email if I wanted to still be considered for admission off the waitlist.

@Cinnamom Have you sent a Letter Of Continued Interest to the Admissions Office yet?

@mrpupper No, but I sent one along with a response to that email. Have you received the email?

From what I’ve read, there seems to be correlation between waitlisted applicants who haven’t sent in a LOCI and those who received the email. I personally haven’t received the email but I did send a LOCI fairly early on, along with a letter of recommendation.

Do you happen to know where I can find a link to the other people that received the email? I haven’t seen anything posted on it!

Idk how many people are getting off the waitlist, but I got off on april 17 I think.

That might mean you got off the waitlist but they want to know if you still want to go to protect their yield

@cinnamom

@mrpupper Did you have a link to other people that received the email? I made a post on Reddit about it but I haven’t been able to find out any info!

how were you contacted when you got accepted? The weird thing about that email is that they wanted me specifically to respond to the email. Very few people (at least in my opinion) outside of CC and Reddit know the importance of writing a letter of continued interest. So I don’t think I would receive the email to send one. Granted, I did respond and send a LOCI after I received this email and did receive a kind response from my admissions officer and Haverford Admissions saying this would be added to my file. However, I am not sure if it means anything.

The reason why I want to believe that it means nothing is because I require close to full-need and have heard of need-blind/need-aware institutions taking into account income and full pay students when going to the waitlists.
