It is looking more and more like my son will be choosing to go to Rose. We are still looking into a few things before the decision is final, but I was curious to know how it would be for him if he did not have a car. We are from Colorado and we were not planning on him taking a car to college, but since Rose is so remote I am wondering how he would get to and from the airport for trips home during breaks and how he would get anywhere off campus.

Our tour guide said about 90% of the students have cars there. Is parking a problem? Is there a charge? Is there any public transportation or a shuttle that could get you to Wal-Mart if you needed stuff or do you just ask friends with cars.

Any input from those with and without cars would be helpful. Thanks!

I am also interested in this. I had actually not thought of it but there is no way we could get son a car and afford RH!!! I wonder if this is too remote…

No problem with not having a car. Lots of activities on campus. In addition, some students do have cars and you can always hitch a ride. My D did not have a car for her first 2 years and she did not miss it.

She does have one for her Junior year, but here may use is coming home over break. No worries about not having a car.

Kids generally send out an email request and friends take them to/from the airport for breaks. Lots of kids head east to Indy, so it’s generally not a problem. (I did have to remind my son to help pay for gas and parking.)

S now has a car as a Junior - it has come in handy for interviews, and trips to WalMart.

Not a problem. I did not have my car here my freshman year. Folks are always going out to eat, shopping, trips on the weekend, etc… in groups, even from day one on the freshman floor. The sophomore advisers play a big role in that as they will be the organizers of such things and make sure everyone is taken care of.

I brought my car up to school sophomore year. Not that big of a deal. It come in handy every once in a while, but not that often as I still usually go out in groups.

Rose-Hulman has also had one of the large vans that we use to transport athletic teams pick up a bunch of students before a break and get everyone to the airport. We recognize students are from all over and that we need to take care of our own.

“S now has a car as a Junior - it has come in handy for interviews”

What kind of interviews?

“Lots of kids head east to Indy”

Is that where the nearest airport is?

Also, all:

How far is it …

…to d.t. terra haute?

…to the local cinema in terra haute?

Is there public transportation to it or to downtown terra haute? If not , and it is not a walk to these places, then kids use their own cars or cop rides together?

No, the nearest airport is the Terre Haute International Airport, but no major airlines fly in/out of there, so if you’re going to travel by air to Rose, Indy is your airport.

To downtown Terre Haute is about 10 minutes. That’s where the movie theater is. People almost always carpool together there on the weekends.

thanks for the reply. One other question on the job interviews: would that be post-graduation job interviews? Or would it be potential employers in greater TH or mid-south Indiana?

I assumed that employers / recruiters from other parts of the country dd come to the campus. True?

Companies conduct interviews on campus for summer internship, co-op, and full-time positions for new graduates. The companies come from all over the country, but there are more from the Midwest and especially Indiana.

My son is a sophomore at Rose; he survived his freshman year without a car. LOL Parking is free at Rose (you must get a sticker) so that’s not a problem. The school will help arrange rides to the airport in Indy for him and students will be happy to give him rides to Walmart, etc. The freshman dorms are especially well geared to helping meet needs such as these.
