I am a home schooled (since 10th grade) high school senior in upstate New York. It’s time for me to start applying for colleges and my search has been a little rough. I’ve come across so many colleges that are okay but none that are perfect for me. Here’s exactly what I’m looking for in a college, most of the important stuff is toward the top:
-AVMA accredited veterinary technology program, preferably a pretty good one with lots of hands-on experience
-LGBT-friendly/liberal environment, and I’m finding this to be pretty uncommon in tech schools
-Motivated students who care more about their education and less about partying
-Mainly residential, and preferably on the smaller side
-I definitely prefer state or private colleges over community colleges
It seems like all of the colleges that I’m absolutely in love with are liberal arts colleges and none of them offer a vet tech major. Any schools that offer a good vet tech program are mediocre when it comes to the general environment and attitude of the students.
So far my top 2 are SUNY Delhi and Becker College. Both have top rated vet tech programs and the students in that area seem to be motivated, especially at Delhi. However, both schools, especially Becker, are big into the party scene. Delhi is a lot cheaper than Becker and seems like more bang for the buck, but from what I’ve read on various college review websites, it isn’t the most socially accepting environment. Becker is pretty expensive but has a decent social environment for LGBT students.
I have several other schools I’m planning on applying to but nothing really stands out about them. They’re really just backup choices: Medaille College, SUNY Canton, Alfred State, Vermont Tech, and a few local community colleges just in case.
I’m still looking for a college that fits all of my needs. I don’t want to spend several years at a place where I don’t fit in, where I’m not accepted for who I am, or where I’m not motivated.
I have been stressing a lot about this lately and decided to try posting on here about it. I’m hoping to hear from people with similar issues, and people who have experienced this and ended up figuring things out in the end. Any suggestions on colleges that fit my needs and offer a vet tech major would be greatly appreciated. Anyone who wants to sympathize with me is welcome to. Please help put my mind at ease!
