My question is directed to those who have/had a job during high school. Do you find it hard to manage both and still get stellar grades? How difficult is it? and finally, does having a job really affect one's chances of getting into top universities? (directed towards everyone) Thanks in advance, and please feel free to share any stories. :)

Well, last year I only worked on the weekends I was able to keep my grades up. Granted, I didn’t have much free time, but I kept decent grades. As for getting into top universities, I’m really not sure. I hope it does!

When I worked on weekday nights last fall it got kind of annoying. Not because my work cut into schoolwork, but because I didn’t have much, if any, time to relax given schoolwork, sports teams and other ECs, and college apps.

I work like 35 hours a week, and it doesn’t interfere with my grades as much as it does my other EC’s. It’s just a pain. I can easilly stay up late doing homework, but I obviously can’t reschedule a track meet because I have to work. Even though I really wish I could.

As for getting into colleges, it looks good as long as your grades don’t get worse because of it.

In the summer I work 40+ hours, and last year I worked anout 20-25 hours a week during school. I didn’t get stellar grades but I still managed to get A’s.

Next year is the most important year in highschool for me, and I’m only going to be working on weekends. I need REALLY good marks.

Hope that helped :)

Typical CC analysis.

No no no.
I mean like 80-85% grades. For most people on here, they would probably shoot themselves if they had my marks, lmao. That’s why I didn’t say stellar, because they aren’t. I was actually pretty happy with the marks I got considering the amount of effort I put in :]
In Canada only your senior year matters, so I’m good !

so an 80-85 in Canada is an A? Dang, I wish I were Canadian.

My faith in the CC user is somewhat restored, though. Thanks for the clarification :).

It depends where you work. I worked at a coffee shop and had weeknights where I had to work right after school until close, which was around 10, and then go home and do my homework. That SUCKED!

But, I then got a job at a retirement home and worked a few weekdays and got off at 8 and that was fine.

I love paychecks.

I used to work at a small book store, to be honest, all I did was study behind the counter in between customers.
