having children

D has long been drawn to a career in medicine and is now taking premed courses. However, knowing some women physicians who had their children at age 40, which she considers too late, she wonders and worries about the timing of children and the realities of internship/residency. D wants to be able to spend time with her children when she has them, and we know women physicans with part-time practices who have a work-family balance she finds appealing. It seems to be early in the career that presents a big conflict. How do women medical students, interns, and residents consider the question of when to have babies? There is a thread about this on MomMD but it isn't very long.

I read that thread on momMD... what I got from it was basically, it's hard whenever. I too, think that the best thing for me might be to work in a practice part-time, but yeah, no clue what I'll do before then. I wish that schools (undergrad, med schools, residency programs) would offer some guidance on this...

Sorry I don't have a better answer, but your daughter is not alone in thinking about this.

My neighbors sons gf has had two children with him. She just had to delay finishing med. school for one year, and then stop residency for a little while but she and my neighbors son alternate shifts so someone is always with the kid. They seem to have a pretty good family life, they travel a lot etc.
