having problem deciding what Subjects to study(A-level)..

I am about to choose a-level courses to study next year,
and my main problem is: how is psychology viewed? Is it viewed as a "classic" subject just as physics/chemistry/economics???

currently I am studying math, economics, chemistry, physics and psychology.(all AS)
and since I want to study economics, political study and philosophy in college, I've decided to continue studying math and economics; but for the third A-level subject, I am still wavering between pschology and chemistry!

since I don't really know how is psychology viewed by the college admission officers(in UK and US). would you guys comment?? I know business studies, media studies and law are not viewed as traditional subjects and the admission officers don't really want students to do those subjects.. is that the same for psychology?

and what do you guys think of the combination of "math+econ+psycho" and "math+econ+chem"??? which one do you think is a better preparation for my future study in social science/humanity?

I aim at universities like oxford, LSE, Geogetown, Chicago.

Thank you for comments!

Oxford and LSE ... intended course of study is Economics? Then you'll need to take up "Economics + Business Studies + Accounting + Mathematics". Its not that simple, you would need at least straight A's with more than a 95% in each of these subjects in AS Level, and your O levels should have been at least 8+ A's. As you might already know this that unlike US universities, in UK, the have an academic cut-off. So, its necessary to have amazing grades.

As for US, Geogetown & Chicago ... intended a dual major or Economics and Political Sciences/International Relations? You definitely need Economics, along with Mathematics. Other subjects aren't mandatory, so its up to you. Take whatever you like... SAT, ECs, Essays, Recommendations and all that would definitely matter a lot.

All the best... :)

thanks for reply! :)
though I heard that Oxford and LSE prefer applicants not to study either accounting or business studies. ?

well I guess psychology interests me more than chemistry does, (plus I think I wouldn't need any chemistry knowledge for my future study), I'll just go for psychology. though what scaries me is that I am also gona take geography and history (AS) next year, and that means there are definitely loads of writing and reading to do..haha

My friend who got into Cambridge had Accounting, Economics, Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Thinking Skills and Urdu in AS level. He applied for Engineering. So, his conditional offer is 3 A's - Mathematics, Physics & Chemistry.

Another friend who got into LSE had Accounting, Economics, Business Studies, Physics, Mathematics, Thinking Skills and Urdu in AS Level. He applied for Economics. So, his conditional offer is 3 A's as well.

Another thing I should mention, both of them had st A's with percentiles 95+, and the Cambridge had 100% in AS Economics.

Trinity College Cambridge - Acceptable A-level Combinations

For UK universities, you must do math+econ+chem.

As you seem well aware, most top UK universiteis will dicard A-levels which they think unsuitable (in other words, unrelated to the courses they offer or too easy). Most of them don't tell you what these subjects are. However, Trinity College Cambridge has produced this list (see link above) which is basically what they stick to. You will see psycology as "limited suitability". Without 3 subjects in the suitable list you will be at an extreme disadvantage at any top UK school, and very unlikely to get in. Defnitely DO NOT take up A-level Accounting or Business studies. Generally in the UK these are taken by people embarking on practical courses rather than those planning on univeristy. As you will see from the examples talha_adnan gives, unsuitable subjects like Accounting are ignored in conditional offers (and you'll only get a conditional offer if you have at least 3 suitable subjects).

If you look at the link below

What if you're a looking forward to study Econ major? According to the list you only require Mathematics as a compulsory subject. Thats weird! The reason I'm asking is, I have Accounting + Economics + Mathematics currently. How would a Liberal arts college see that?

Econ and math are fine. Most liberal arts colleges would prefer if your third subject was a liberal arts subject as well (science, social science, humanities, foreign languages, etc), but accounting as a third A-level will not automatically preclude you from admission.

I took Urdu Language in AS level, sounds a little liberal doesn't it? :P

thank you guys, especially cupcake, the website is very useful
but see now I changed my mind again..
probably I should just do chemistry, which is much less fun to do.:(
