Hi. I’m currently in Grade 11 and I’m applying for A-levels in a few days. I’m not sure what A-level subjects I should take and was wondering if Ivy leagues prefer certain subjects. I do not want to limit my options as I’m still not completely sure what career path I want to take in the future. I know I want to take Mathematics and Economics but other than that I’m lost. It would help if anyone could tell me what subjects they took in A-levels and which courses they enjoyed so i can make a more informed decision.
You should take whatever you can get As in. Maths + Economics are two solid subjects so you can add anything from History or Philosophy to Foreign Language to Physics or Chemistry, etc. As long as it’s a strong subject for you.
If you add a 4th subject it can be a “fun” or lighter subject such as Design& Technology or Media Studies. Adding a 4th is not necessary at all.
Predicted AAA will be expected.
Note that MUCH more is expected, too.
Unlike in the UK, there are no prescribed coursework for students taking A levels. Generally, the more rigorous, the better. Ivy league schools are familiar with the A levels and will understand your scores in context. Take whatever you are most interested in, and where you think you can get an A/A*.
Each school has its own policy on whether they will grant you college credit. Check with each college’s website. So you might be able to save some money by graduating early if you can get advanced credit for your A level courses. But read up ahead of time to see what they will accept.
