i’m a rising senior and i’m really stressing out because i have to apply to colleges in the fall and not only do i have a list of over 20 colleges i want to apply to to shorten, i’m also having trouble figuring out what to major in. i have multiple interests, way too many actually, and i can’t decide which one i like most. or i just keep changing my mind. at the moment my choices are journalism, photography, media arts/film/comm, sociology, english, & history/art history. but the 2 that really capture my attention the most are journalism and photography since those are the careers i wanna go into. i would love to major in photography but i don’t wanna get a BFA bc i don’t wanna take all those foundation drawing/painting/sculpting classes ( i want to get into photojournalism anyway) either way i need a portfolio, and money is tight so i still don’t have a camera. there’s some schools that don’t require a portfolio but they are very few. and i’m not sure if photography is really something i should major in, maybe minor? if any of you are photography students, can you just explain to me your opinion on it, the workload, and just anything else you think i should know? as for journalism, i absolutely love the idea of studying it and it’s my end goal to write, but based on the research i’ve done you don’t NEED to major in it. but as for most things i want to do you don’t need to major in any of it so i guess it doesn’t matter. english with a writing concentration would be another option too bc i don’t want to study all lit. then there’s art history, i don’t know much about the subject, i’ve done a lot of research but not a lot of people study it so i haven’t seen many opinions on people who have studied it/how they like it/how interesting it is etc. so if you have studied it please let me know how you feel about it.
also can you guys give me tips on shortening my list of colleges to apply to? like what i should consider? thanks in advance. p.s. please don’t try to tell me oh major in business, science, engineering! bc i don’t like any of those things and i’m not gonna waste my time studying something i dislike. and the natural sciences don’t have good jop opps either. other than medical school which i’m definitely not doing. i just want to study something i’m interested in & that i can get a job i LIKE with.
