I’m entering my junior year of college and I’m having a hard time finding an internship. I live in the DC area and I’m studying political science.
I have no experience with previous internships which is probably why I’m having a hard time, as many people in this area are incredibly experienced. But it has been difficult for me, especially in the summer, as I have no job and no internship. My friends seem to get internships with great ease (DOJ, grassroots, US embassy abroad, etc) and it’s very frustrating for me to see them excel while I’m just here doing nothing…its honestly made me rather depressed.
Despite having interviews I can never seem to make it past that.
Are there any good ways for me to find an internship? Any good organizations that take on people with little to no experience?
Start by asking yourself what your passions are… causes, issues. After all, you must have something driving you to major in political science. Once you’ve identified what you care about then go seek out organizations of like - minded individuals and start volunteering and get yourself involved. Make connections with people who are working in the area you’re interested in. And for goodness sake don’t wait until the summer to do it. Whatever college you go to, spend time this summer strategizing on how you can get better connected with relevant organizations in the town where your college is located and then plan to get involved in one of those organizations during the school year. The summer time is not the only time to intern. Finally, start your internship search for next summer in the fall.
Try a site called Idealist dot org. I just put in D.C. and there are several internships. I have suggested to others that they try the craigslist as well. You can look through the different sections or search all of “Jobs” by putting ‘intern’ in the search box.
Really working as an assistant to any area gives you experience that you can use later so don’t discount opportunities that are not directly related to your major.
I say you put some serious time into your interview skills.
I’m a total rarity in that regard- I’ve always enjoyed interviews, regardless of which side of the desk I’m on.
Go to the career counseling office first thing Monday, and make an appointment. Ask about mock interviews. Have them critique you and offer suggestions.
