DadRow -
As soon as you hear they’ve been cleared and are back on the water again, please let us know. I guess they’ll miss the Charles in 10 days (not sure it was on their schedule) but maybe they can do a few of the end-of-season races.
Good luck to the Bison rowers.

No need to apologize. As to “due process”, in my view the answer is no. A severe punishment has alreay been handed out to the girls prior to the investigation, and the investigation has gone on for weeks. I would not agree that due process means punishment before an inquiry. Punishment before an inquiry gives the public a reason to presume guilt and creates an internal bias to find guilt, if only to justify the punishment already handed down. It will be hard for the administration to say “never mind” after what they have put the girls through.

What a bunch of baloney.

I agree with you

What would have been a better administrative response?

When four students from the same party—and at least one says they were forced to drink in order to be accepted onto a club sport team—are admitted to the ER for care related to alcohol overuse/overdose (??), shouldn’t the school do something?? You make a good point about due process, DadRow, but it it might be irresponsible had they done nothing.
Personally, I expect some foolishness related to alcohol use, but transportation to the ER seems extreme.

What would have been an appropriate response?

Shouldn’t the response the same as it would be for other teams? It just seems as though they would have gotten right on it, and have been finished, if it had been a “money” sport like football or men’s basketball.

Indeed, the lengthy time devoted to this would seem to have potential call for concern about one or several things …

BU’s commitment to getting it “right” and getting it done ASAP

Concern for undergraduate students and the “residential education” they ask all prospectives to expound upon

That there is something more here and either a cover-up is cooking or an inability to get a handle on what would seem to be a fairly straightforward situation. Ah what intrigue and suspense … Whatever, the trail is going cold after all these weeks on the northcentral PA banks of the muddy Susquehanna … Where is Sgt. Friday when we need him. He’da had this solved in 30 minutes.

Your guess? Stay tuned …

Whatever it is, the way this has dragged out and deterred student-athletes from participating, notably those who were not even involved, is a black-eye on the Bison, imo. A case-study on “what we have here is a failure to communicate.”

While it would not SEEM to be connected, at least directly, one must wonder if the Provost’s sudden departure, with little notice is somehow either tied to or symptomatic of problems at the top here?

btw, I seriously doubt if hoops or halfbacks bring in any real “money” aside from alumni philanthropy who consider these items essential. In fact, I’d bet that either one of these drain the BU bucket more than track or rowing or X country or field hockey or … take your pick. Bball MAY make a few sheckles.

Anybody know when the thirty days is over (assuming the school is going to honor and meet that self-imposed deadline)? This thing just seems to be dragging on.

It’s especially unpleasant to know that athletes who weren’t even involved have to stay under a cloud until it’s resolved. I would have thought that the way to go would be a quick but thorough investigation, punishment if appropriate, and in any case a clear statement to all of Bucknell’s athletes and coaches about what the standards are and what the penalties will be for violating them.

I continue to hope the crews are able to get in at least one race this season, but the clock is running out .

What’s up. It has been more than 30 days.

As far as I know, still no news.

Sigh, I guess the girls are looking forward to the spring season…

bump…

Still waiting for the verdict. The expectation is that the girl’s will be found not guilty of hazing… but we shall see. Soon I hope.

Well, good luck to the girls, and please keep us updated!

This is now at the point of being ridiculous and smacks of absolute mediocrity in leadership.

One sidenote is that the rowing recruiters have the gall to be pushing/pressuring candidates to make BU their ED school and who knows how this will all play out. Most certainly heads are on the block, but whose?

The president ought to gather some stones and stand up and inform, clear the air on all of this, no matter what the issues and answers are. Shame on BU leadership more so than on their immature, ignorant undergraduate rowers. The latter have the excuse of being just that. One must really wonder what President Brian’s excuse is.

It’s like they’ve sunk into some black hole and nobody in the administration even remembers they are gone. I’m starting to get nervous for their spring season.

The coach was on such a roll, recruiting widely, strongly, and imaginatively. This is like steam rolling over all of that. Imagine what it’s like for him when he can’t showcase his rowers and their results, or even make a convincing argument that the school really supports the team and its future. I’m thinking this year’s incoming recruiting class won’t be nearly as strong and I’m wondering whether some of the current team members aren’t carefully parsing the D I transfer rules to try to figure out what the present situation would do to their length of eligibility at another school. I wouldn’t blame them.

Well, good luck to them in getting back on the water and in rowing in the spring (if they are allowed to row in the spring). This thing is just out of control and out of synch with preventing future occurrences of what they are accused of doing (whatever the administration may think that is at this point, if they are thinking at all).

Shame on immature, ignorant anonymous posters. What is your excuse Whistle Pig?

What IS your point DadRow? If you disagree, make your point, please. Don’t go name-calling though. No place here.

My point is that referring to Bucknell undregraduate rowers as “ignorant and immature” is totally inappropriate and has no place here.

As far as “recruiting” my rower was on campus during a weekend very close to the incident, and came home with the explanation of what happened. There was no hazing. There were some inappropriate choices made as far as drinking, but it was not a team sanctioned event. The punishment is the fall season. Both teams have been practicing this fall and will be ready for the spring.
