Hazing on the rowing teams?

Are you kidding? They’re 18 -22. Of course they’re ignorant and immature! EVERY 20 year old is such. And notably, the fellas, and who else knows have rendered clear evidence of their adolescent mindsets … drink an oar sometime and see where it lands you. Nothing personal, just the truth. Don’t take your baby so seriously. He/she is young. Otherwise why would we be paying $40K for them to row, play games, be in Greek entities, etc. etc. etc.

one2go … I’d have to wonder about a reality check on what your recruit saw. If it was not a team thing, no matter how it was portrayed, no way the U. is gonna zap the fall season for not only the perps but also their male and female teammates. That dog doesn’t hunt. Ain’t no way they’re gonna come out in the end and say, “whoops, we made a mistake. Everyone back in the pool. We thought it was you, but it was someones else. So sorry.” There is something here and like it or otherwise, it has a lot to do with hazing and rowing. And the competition must be loving it.

I’m fearful we may not hear again from Coach Kish. Otherwise we would have.

wow, had to go and check Whistle Post’s checks from the past. What is your problem with Bucknell? Something personal obviously. Go back to the Naval Academy forum and leave the rest of us alone!

Pig- Did Bucknell reject you at some point?

Nope … Great place and that lends no excuse for treating the public as it is in this instance. This is no secluded camelot kingdom. There are many people being affected in this.

Mother of “Wild Child” … I did have to chuckle about your code name … speaks volumes, huh?.. in light of the defensiveness of the Bucknell boys and girls being duly noted as immature and ignorant in their behavior and knowledge. Good kids, and just that.

And now we’re not days, not weeks, but months, and approaching a full semester about an event that none here seem to know diddlysquat of. Perhaps there’s been a breach of national security?

And where is the President and Coach Kish? Come out come out wherever you may be. Adoring listeners and inquiring minds want to know …

What could possibly have happened to cancel not one, but 2 full fall rowing seasons?

I didn’t see my post as particularly defending anything. It was aimed at your obvious animosity for a school and an administration with which you have no apparent connection. Yes, I have a kid who- gasp- drinks and parties at his college. I will also concede that 18-21 year olds are immature compared to older adults. What’s the news there?

Hey Pig-
Remember this other shot you took at Bucknell in September?

Don’t know. It may be one of those campus escapades of no consequence to students and prospects. Is this a “leave quietly and we’ll pay you for the remainder of the year and you can retain your office and title” … or is it “I’ll leave quietly, since I can’t win anyway because of someone at BU, and you will pay me for the remainder of the year and I will maintain my office and title” while she looks for a real job. You just have to believe this is a lawyered deal. One would have to speculate this is a Bucknell caused issue that she’s agreed to keep quiet about in that USNA has seemingly welcomed her back with open arms immediately. And the fact that she’s a BU alumna turns the worm even a bit more. Ear to the gound on this one …

Glad you brought that up … there’s still no answer on that one. You’re doing your homework, Mr. Bullpuppy. Keep it rolling.

Bulldog, your point is a good one. As noted, these slots simply aren’t emptied in September in the absence of something. If it smells like a rose, looks like a rose, feels like a rose, it just might be …

Clearly the air needs clearing in St. Lewisburg. Maybe it’s a “conspiracy?” The plot thickens … and the more griping about the griping, the thicker it seems to get. Stay tuned for something that’s apparently more than a little bad behavior by a few rowers but rather merely having a few friendly social drinks and who weren’t hazing other rowers but no one knows if there were any other participants other than rowers and a Provost who was just homesick and couldn’t wait until June to go home even though she had a contract requiring her to do so …

Pig,

Go to the Bucknell website and read or listen to the President’s recent remarks on the Provost position, then comment on the subject. Knowing you, I’m sure you’ll find some deep, ulterior message, hidden meanings and subplots. Let’s not engage in analysis by assertion.

Hey Pig- Noticed that your daughter has applied to Bucknell. Why?

College athletics: Bucknell sanctions crew, rowing teams

By The Daily Item

LEWISBURG – Bucknell University President Brian Mitchell on Wednesday announced sanctions for the men’s club-varsity crew and women’s varsity rowing teams, including suspension of competition for the fall 2007 season and probation for the 2008 season.

President Mitchell ordered the sanctions after reviewing the findings of a task force he commissioned to investigate the crew and rowing teams’ involvement in events Sept. 15 that resulted in the hospitalization of four students. The task force determined that team members conducted themselves in a manner that jeopardized the health and safety of others.

“It raises great concern that these teams were involved in activities that resulted in the injury and hospitalization of Bucknell students,” Mitchell said. “We take such violations of student conduct very seriously and hope these sanctions and the creation of additional educational programs will communicate to our student-athletes the imperative of making student safety the top priority.”

On Sept. 15, one female rowing member and three male crew members were hospitalized for excessive alcohol consumption. The task force interviewed the hospitalized students, other team members, and coaches during its investigation.

The review indicated that both teams had conducted scavenger hunts, separate parties, and then a combined party. The men’s event included competition drinking. Although students at both events could choose not to participate, the task force concluded that elements of this team activity jeopardized the health and safety of the participating students.

The women’s team sanctions include suspension of all competition for the fall season. The team had already cancelled several events because of the immediate suspension in September of both teams following an initial review. Novices were excluded from the suspension after Oct. 25 when the task force determined that no novices were invited to or participated in the events of Sept. 15.

The team may resume competition Jan. 1, but will be on probation for the calendar year, with any further team violations resulting in cancellation of competition and practice. The team’s senior leaders must also develop, with the approval of the Dean of Students, and deliver a program to supplement existing education programs for varsity teams on the risks of alcohol consumption and hazing.

The men’s team activities were determined to be more hazardous because competition drinking was involved. Accordingly, the upper-class members received greater sanctions. Juniors and seniors will not be permitted to participate in crew team activities for the remainder of the academic year. Sophomores will not be permitted to compete or travel as members of the crew team until Feb. 1. First-year members will be permitted to resume crew competition on Jan. 1. The recommendations were limited to team sanctions. Individual students from both teams still face possible sanctions for violations of the University student conduct code.

President Mitchell also directed the Athletics Department to review and revise its educational programs about the risks of alcohol consumption and hazing and to create additional programs to assist upper-class members in team leadership responsibilities.

Women’s rowing is a varsity sport governed by the NCAA and overseen by the Athletics Department. It receives University funding and coaching support. Men’s crew is a club-varsity program that is not sanctioned by the NCAA. It is overseen by University recreational services and is funded through student and alumni support.

If the situation weren’t so pathetic, poorly handled, and dangerous, it would be easy to gloat. I’m not.

What kind of silliness is it when the president announces, AFTER it’s all over …

Will someone help him in all of this, please? It’s a tragic comedy of errors. PR 101 … how not to handle a hazing scenario that isn’t really hazing and doesn’t really involve our wronged girls except for that one poor girl who had to go to the ER because of alcohol poison by the rowing team but it wasnt really the rowing team but we’re gonna suspend them for the season that’s already over …

This borders on pure silliness, at least the way Bucknell has seemingly mismanaged it all.

Again Piggy,

If Bucknell is such an idiotic place WHY did you write the check so your daughter could apply?

Whistle Pig:

If your daughter does go to Bucknell and she rows, she will not find a better group of friends in her life.

I hope this is my last posting on this thread.

Dad …

Confess to wondering what you’re saying. I’m hoping it’s that you’re fully persuaded that despite this situation and lapse in adolescent judgements, you believe they are great kids, to which I’d hope for the very same, were that the case.

And to your 2nd point, ditto.

Bulldog, what’s the status with Penn and Columbia. Did you have to settle?

forgive me - i am new to this thread and Bucknell at all. Can someone please clarify for me

was the men’s crew team allowed to compete this Fall?

If so what dates were they active?

If bot, when are they able to row again?

Thanks

The good news for Bucknell is that Coach Steve Kish has created a rowing program that is successful and won the 2007 IRAs.

The bad news for Bucknell is that Coach Kish has created a culture at Bucknell that runs contrary to the long term interests of many of his student athletes.

Wow, another Dad Or Mom whose child rows somewhere else (Brown) who decides to take a shot at Bucknell and the Bucknell coach.
