Health Sciences Major?

Hello all. I know I have a lot of financial decisions to make about school and my future, but one thing still remains…I need help deciphering whether Health Sciences is a good major. I wanted to attend medical school, however, I am not too sure I can follow through with the plan. Just for now though, I have tried to read up on the major and I have read some people say it is okay, and others say it is not a good path for medical school or job outlooks either. On the major map ( I was registered to pick classes at the end of the month…) for the school I am admitted now, I see General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Calculus for life sciences,Microbiology Labs, etc. I have seen several of these class names before on articles/threads about Pre-Med courses. Has anyone ever majored in this? What do you guys think?

Generally speaking, you can apply to Medical School with any major as long as you have completed the prerequisites set forth by the medical schools you want to apply to. The only common prerequisite I don’t see included in your list is physics.

You will want to pick a major that you can do well in, as your GPA (as well as your MCAT score) is an important factor in your medical school application.

I will link you to another thread that may have some useful information for you.

It would be helpful to know what all of the courses entailed in this major are. What is your college/university?

If you hope to attend med school in the future but are not 100% sure you will make the cut, maybe choose an allied health or science major that you can fall back on in case you end up not going the med school route. I did clinical dietetics for my undergrad and there were a lot of people who had been interested in med school but for one reason or another changed direction. Personally I could never dedicate the amount of time necessary to excel in gad school (studying 10 hours/day every day), and that’s just being realistic. You can still use a major like that to get into med school if, at the end of undergrad you still feel you want to pursue that. The more general “health sciences” major may not be the best for job prospects should you decide not to do med.
