Health Sciences Scholars Program

Has anyone ever been involved in the Health Sciences Scholars Program? I understand it's a living learning community. I would love to get an inside 411 on what it's like. When do you apply during senior year? What are the dorms like? As a member of the HSSP what type of things or activities are you involved with?

I was wondering about the same questions!

We visited the HSSP during our Campus Day. You apply as part of the Housing Application, as you do for the other residential programs. The dorm is Couzens. It is one of the Hill dorms, so not on Central Campus, but not on North Campus. Half of the dorm is upper classmen, so it isn’t a big freshman dorm. Couzens doesn’t have a dining hall, but you can use the one in MoJo, or others on campus. It was remodeled pretty recently and seems nice. Probably one of the quieter/less social dorms.

You have to enroll in a 2 credit/semester class for the whole year. Attendance at evening speakers about twice a month is also expected. Plus, it is a substance free program, and they try to plan alcohol/drug free activities (like bowling or walking downtown for frozen yogurt), as you are not only not allowed to have drugs/alcohol in the dorm, but you are not supposed to come back to the dorm drunk. If you want classic keg parties, this is not for you. Because of the time commitments and the substance free policy, it is theoretically possible to rush a frat/sorority, but people generally don’t.

Oh my. I feel like it would look good on a med school application but I don’t know if I could sacrifice the “college experience” in order to join. Haha. Thanks for the info Pokieg!

If you are looking for a pre-med resume builder, you might look at UROP or the MRC. Both are undergraduate research programs, but one has a residence component and the other does not. If you are female, you can also check out WISE, which is Women in Science and Engineering. We met some of the WISE women, and they were all impressive, and the senior RA’s had multiple medical school acceptances.

I will definitely look into those!
