Healthcare Management

Hey guys,

I was wondering about the career based aspects(what careers I can get, wage, stability, prospects) if I major in healthcare management. I was interested in this major after attending a college open house, however, because I didn't have time to ask follow-up questions regarding this major. If anyone can give me some info I'd be really grateful.

Thanks!

My advice would be to contact any of the people you met at the open house for this major and ask them.

I started out wanting to get my degree in healthcare management. Its a good degree but I changed mine because I did not have enough work experience in healthcare. I went to the career specialist at my school and she suggested me change my degree because with that degree you have to have good work experience in hospitals, physician offices, etc. And I had none. Career specialist told me a lot of students were getting that degree and could not find jobs because they did not do enough internships or have enough work experience. Career specialist also suggested getting this degree in a certain field (dermatology, Optometry, etc.) because she also said many students were getting this bachelors degree and coming back for more schooling because they needed to get a specific field in which to manage in, again for not being able to find a job. Since there was all these problems with this degree at my school they recently changed the bachelors degree program and now you pick a sub-field in which field you would like to manage. However, you can get a general degree in healthcare management, but managing a dermatologist office is different then like managing in a pediatrician office. Guess all the paperwork is different and the techniques you need to know to deal with the management part. Hope this helps.

For the career you could be a hospital floor manager or manage a small doctors office. Wage depends on the facility you work in. Working in a big hospital you would make more then working at a small doctors office.

I know every college is different, but the adviser & career specialist at my school recommend what I said above.

shelby2535, what school do you go to that has specializations for HCM? I have not seen that before.
