Hearing Sciences

I was wondering what the best schools/programs are in the mid-Atlantic/Northeast region are for Hearing Sciences, Communication Sciences, or similar majors leading into Audiology.

To clarify, I mean undergraduate schools and programs

Pittsburgh, Maryland, Syracuse, UMass, UConn; also possibly consider BU, PSU, Emerson, Buffalo, Temple, Northeastern

Since audiology is a pre-professional program and these programs have to meet certain accreditation requirements, all of them can provide an adequate level of preparation. Nonetheless, you probably could find stronger programs if you expand your search outside the NE/Mid-Atlantic region.

Thank you very much, I appreciate your help! I want to start looking into programs that are competitive but would offer me enough research opportunities

I just think that you should keep in mind that in order to get a job in the field, you have to have at least a masters degree. If I were you I would try to expand your search farther to the south. UVA has an excellent Audiology/Speech Pathology program and so does Xavier University in Louisiana. It’s not easy though. It requires a masters degree followed by internships and other coursework. You then have to take an exam to become licensed.

I noticed that UVA undergrad is a BS Ed. degree. I know that means bachelor of science of education, but how would that affect the chances of getting into a better Aud./PhD. program? Are the courses different, is it just geared for those who would be working in the school systems?

Is the Bs ED really that different?

Zapfino provided a great list for you.

Audiology is now a Doctorate level degree. Undergrad you should think about a Bachelor’s in Speech and Audiology. (Speech requires a Master’s)

Do not expect to do research in the field as an undergrad.

What state are you in? I would recommend a state school and save the money for a grad school program. Undergrad in the major has few Audiology courses and most Speech and some science classes. Focus on your bachelors at this point, not your AuD or PhD program. GPA and GRE will matter for that.

This list may help you determine which schools have an undergraduate program for you (by state).

Thank you very much. In state would be MD. I was looking at more selective schools than UMDCP though. UVA’s program interests me but I am still curious about the real difference between the BS and BS Ed.

I have also looked into speech pathology and I thank you for your suggestion. I will keep it in mind but I have been more interested in audiology and the concepts of it, and the opportunities it would allow me to take advantage of throughout my profession.

Thank you again to everyone who has replied! I am new to CC and appreciate it very much!

Grobin… There is no undergrad major in Audiology (other than combined with Speech)!

Looks like the Undergraduate BS Ed. is in Speech and Audiology as part of the Curry School of Education at UVa. UVa no longer has an AuD program, but still offers a Master’s in Speech Pathology, I believe (I googled.) When I was applying, way back in the day  UVa was my first choice for M.A. Audiology. I was accepted and flew down to find housing, and stopped by the Clinic while there and was told they only accepted 4 of us. Bye, bye… Too few for me. I went elsewhere. Anyway, that may be one of the reasons they don’t have it. Too expensive to run???

Why not Towson?
U Maryland at College Park?

I know there is not an audiology undergrad but I was looking into ones that lead into it such as speech and hearing sciences and communication sciences and disorders.

I have been told by various counselors and teachers that UMDCP will be a safety for me, so I have been looking at other programs that may be a reach or match for me
