Heat Exhaustion Today

Has anyone heard any specific information on the news story from Yahoo News I have copied below?

"ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Four midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy are being treated for signs of heat exhaustion after running an obstacle course in near 90-degree weather that is part of an Eastern heat wave.

Naval Academy spokeswoman Judy Campbell says first responders at the Annapolis, Md., academy were called about 10 a.m. to assist four midshipmen. The four had completed an endurance course that included climbing cargo netting and jumping over logs.

The midshipmen were on the course with a larger group from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

Campbell said they were being treated and monitored. She did not know if the individuals were men or women or if they were taken to a hospital."

If it was your mid you would have heard by now. They all got to call mommy after medical treatment. All are ok now.

Annapolis and the mid-Atlantic region can be pretty miserable during summer heat waves; strenuous physical exercise can affect lots of fit plebes too. I bet the plebes were dropping like flies. The ambulances and first aid stations are there for a reason. Those taken to hospital would call home, but many who receive first aid including re-hydration with IVs probably would just take it easy for the rest of the day. At least Bancroft Hall is now air-conditioned!

It has been beastly hot here in Merry-land this week.

We’ve been following the record heat wave in Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and surrounding region–offering lots of silent prayers and great empathy for the plebes. I understand the Academy restricts physical activity on extremely hot days. On the West Coast we’ve been having unseasonably cool weather. It was downright chilly in San Diego on the Fourth of July and this week–despite the recent earthquake! Got our attention!

was down in annapolis over the weekend- rain on saturday, hazy hot and humid on sunday. Not many plebes to be found during the heat of the day, but come 6pm they were all in their sea cammies and marching out on walden field with their guns. About 40 of them soaking up some shade, and the typical few watching from the sidelines on crutches. Progressing as planned.

Fully appreciate how anxious these days are for plebe moms and dads. Hang in- they are well taken care of. Tomorrow will be 2 weeks “done,” and only one more week until the cadre turn-over. Things look a lot brighter after that, and it is only 4 weeks until PPW and one more after that until reform. Blink your eyes and it will be Christmas, sneeze and you might miss Herndon, and turn around three times fast and it will be Commissioning. Honest to goodness, it will go THAT fast!

But in these dog days of summer, keep sending those letters and cards, ship off another boodle box, make sure your cell phones are charged up and with you for that first phone call home, and thank your lucky stars that your sons and daughters are having the experience of their life! :)
