Hi
I am currently attending a community college and was wondering what you all think of this scheldule and if it is “do-able” or not.
1st semester O-Chem w/ lab (5 units)
1st semester Calc. based physics w/ lab (5 units)
3rd semester Calc. (5 Units)
Differential Equations (4 Units)
The reason why is I know it is popular for students to do 2 math courses with O-Chem, or 2 math courses with physics, but I was told by one of my tutors today that she took Physics with 2 math courses and it was terrible. I plan on doing that plus O-Chem.
I really need to take these courses b/c I want to transfer asap.
Is it possible given the difficulty of the courses. I know O-Chem is really hard along with Calc and Physics so I am just wondering if anyone here has taken similar course loads and how it was.
P.S. I DO NOT HAVE A JOB (School is my only obligation)
Um thats literally crazy schedule, you need to drop one.
Assuming a semester system community college in California (since “units” is a common term in California but not elsewhere)…
19 units is normally a high workload, especially with two lab courses. However, it does appear that your community college has unit inflation, since at many universities, the usual unit values are:
Organic chemistry with lab: 5 units (e.g. UCB CHEM 3A/3AL or 112A).
Physics (calculus-based) with lab: 4 units (e.g. UCB PHYSICS 7A).
Calculus 3: 4 units (e.g. UCB MATH 53).
Differential equations: fewer than 4 units (covered in 10 weeks spread across UCB MATH 1B and 54, equivalent to 2.67 units if it were split out into one course).
So, in a university, the course load would be about 16 units’ worth.
Are you a chemistry or chemical engineering major?
Yea, I am a chemical engineering major. I am taking 26.5 units this semester but they are much easier courses than the ones I listed above.
1st sem. Calc (5)
1st sem. Gen Bio w/ lab (6.5)
2nd sem. Gen Chem w/ lab (5)
1st sem. English (4)
Culture Anthropology (3)
Psychology (3)
26.5 Units but in easier courses. English, Anthro and Psych are also online. The bio course is 6.5 units because it has an extended 1.5 unit lecture.
I don’t find this schedule actually to bad, considering I don’t have a job.
How does this current schedule compare to the one I posted above? If I can do this schedule currently, can I maybe handle the above one also?
Are you in calculus 1 or calculus 2 this semester? If you are only in calculus 1, going to calculus 3 and differential equations is not a good idea, since these need calculus 2.
You should have Calc3 before you take Differential Equations, I think.
O-Chem is a killer and its advisable to have a “lighter” than average schedule during that semester. So you may want to take an easier class (perhaps online) plus OChem, Physics, and Calc3.
Im taking calc 2 over the summer : )
Okay good to know. Maybe I will take Linear w/ Calc 3 and save Differential for Spring
