Never mind, I have nothing better to do right now.

More accuratly I don't want to edit my paper and tommorow is D-Day the largest campus wide party of the year and it's going to be beautiful out.

A story on the differance between the D'lions and Freshman Fellows

once upon a time...

not.

So to start out with, I am a D'lion on Gilbert 3 Long. I will live on Gilbert 3 long next year starting in August. I currently reside in Gilbert 3 West so it won't be such a big transition for me. The D'Lion organization has been part of the UR for at least 50 years. It is an organization, that is rare on college campuses, that is dedicated to helping freshman orient themselves in a new environment.

On top of that, we are an organization that provides a variety of services to the UR community as well. We host 3 blood drives, guest lecturers, community service programs, and a variety of other programs.

All of the D'lions have lived in freshman dormitories and enjoy being studetns at UR. We want to bring a nice, social, workable, healthy atmosphere to freshmans and around campus. But mostly freshman becuase we'll be living with you guys.

We are educated in a variety of fields so we can provide academic support as well if needed, I am Medicine and economics. I know others in the organization who are music majors, english majors, political science majors, etc. We have the capabilities to provide those things. However, as I will discus later, the "Freshman Fellows" are also there to provide that service and technically should be referred to first as they have training in this matter.

We also run social programs for the hall that can be going to a RPO concert, going to waterstreet msuic performance hall (the rock, heavy metal, sort of thing), ice skating, eating out at some of rochester's really great restaurants, visiting a mueseam, and many many other things.

We know the campus very well and have connections to various professors and other groups and informations as well.

Plus a lot of us are involved with various other student organizations, so if you want information about that, we can help you there as well.

Technically speaking we are a "special interest housing" group." however over the past 50 years we have expanded from just living and helping freshman adjust to being the sort of support group for anyone who needs help.

I'd like to be the first person you would come to ask for help, advice, or maybe just to talk to. I know what it's like to come to college and experiance the sudden freedom and sometimes get a little laxed, or face incredible academic challenges (which you will face if you take Bio 112 and 113). Just come and bother us D'lions when you need us. Becuase we'll be there for that.

Oh and we usually leave free food in the study lounges and you can always come into my room and grab a bite or use my microwave. We provide nice things like that too.

Now as for Freshman Fellows.

They're a new organization, similar to D'lions but have a distinct role on Freshman halls. They are there to provide academic support. They take a class and are trained to help you with a wide variety of academic things. If your not used to Excel, they're actually well trained in that.

But their role and goals are strictly limited to academic support. I'd like to think of them as the resident nerd. But a few of my friends are Fellows and they are really cool and friendly as the D'lions.

Just to get this out as well, both organizations are essentially under the control of "Reslife" since we get rooms in freshman dorms.

both organizations have an interview process like any other job as it is, if anything, a year long job.

Freshman Fellows are paid 500$ a semester and live in singles.
D'Lions are not paid, which I think makes us a group that is really motivated to help you guys out. We live in doubles and singles depending on the building and hall.

Oh there isn't a double with a guy and a girl in it. Actually that's the reason why I'm in a single in Gilbert. Beside my absolute love for the Gilbert dorm my D'lion partner is a girl so we both got singles. (Good plan eh?)

Oh, I should clarify that. There are two d'lions per hall unless you live in Gilbert 1 or hoeing 4 i think. In Gilbert, 2 D'lions manage Short and East (which are wings in Gilbert) and another two manage Long and West. In Hoeing, I think there are 2 per floor, becuase they are "smaller." In Sue B there are two per wing, which puts a total of 8 per floor.

I think that covers that.

Again, as a D'lion, I and any other D'lion are here to help you guys out. In any way. Plus on move in, we carry all of your stuff to your room so it's really not that bad. you just need to get to know your roomie and decorate accordingly or somethign like that.

So enjoy this excessively long post and say hi to me sometime. If you find yourself in Gilbert, let me know and I'll put you in touch with your D'lions, or if your in Gilbert 3 Long (which is all guys) or Gilbert 3 West (all girls) say hi to me and Perrine (we're your D'lions).
