Hello Class of 2010 or people thinking about it!

Hello!

I just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Arthur Chang. I am part of an organization at the University of Rochester called the D'lions (short for Dandelions [which the administrators claim to be our school 'flower' yet i'm pretty sure it's a weed...]). I just wanted to let those of you know who are working on decisions or have already decided that I am available for any help you guys need.

A little background on myself. I'm currently a freshman, I will be a s'more next year. I'm from the Rochester area. I'm currently double majoring in Microbiology and Immunology (that's one major) and Economics possibly with a minor in music. I will be EMT certified this summer which also will make me a proud member of R/C MERT the on campus EMS service. I fence when I can (Foil, and i'm thinking about learning sabre) and I absolutely love UR.

If your struggling with decisions feel free to get in contact with me, I can generally help you with basic information about various departments or extracurricular stuff.

If you've made your decisions and know where your going to live, please also let me know!

As a little additional background, the D'lions live on freshman halls and we have a small budget to fund hall programs like parties, trips off campus, concerts, and other things. So if you know where your going to live, I'd be glad ot put you in touch with the D'lions so you can get to know them (Btw, I am a D'lion on Gilbert 3 Long [Room numbers 362 - 390 or something like that])

Oh and Gilbert's dorms are bigger than Sue B's. You can write on your housing application where you want to live in like the corner and they'll take that into consideration. Although they don't say that.

So yeah! Feel free to get in contact with me.

my S/n for aim is: dltprm
my e-mail is: dltprm@gmail.com/email, or achang3@mail.rochester.edu
and if you have facebook you can search my name and other info.

Good luck with the remainng tests and classes and I hope you choose UR (or if you've already chosen, pick Gilbert! our rooms are bigger, they don't smell [as much], and it's not as hot in the fall as it is in Sue B [plus it's closer to classes])

you've gotten me convinced...i was debating between sue b and gilbert, but i'm gonna pick gilbert - I'm Suman - accepted ED2...this year's gonna be A-mazing...when do ED acceptees get their housing applications? or is that the same time as RD?

is it possible for freshman to get a single room?

Single are generally not allowed for freshman, unless you have a medical / social / something reason that rould require you to be in a single.

And even upper classman don't usually get singles. As with many colleges there's a lottery for rooms after your freshman year. However I am pleased to announce that sort of new dorms are available.

South Side, formerly known as glick. Will offer apartment style housing to S'mores and up. Essentially it'll be a big double, but you odn't share the same bedroom but you share a common space. It's kind of like a suite except there's a cleaning staff so you don't relaly actually have to clean your own bathroom. Which is a huuuuggge plus especially if you pair up with osmeone messy, or in some cases have drunk people enter your bathroom and miss the toilet by....oh say...100 feet.

Other than that, singles are generally difficult to obtain until your at least a junior. The housing point system is completely against you as a sophomore unless you get in a big group and try for a 8 person / 4 person suite. It's actually kind of an interesting process the housing lottery. But you have at least a year before you have to think of that.

Oh, there are "reserved" singles too for Res life staff and associated groups. In freshman halls.... the singles are divided into...
-Graduate Head Resident (which you won't qualify for until you graduate and decide to work for the UR) her rooms is about the size of a 4-5 doubles. One per building, they run the entire building or major sections of it (in the case of Sue B)
-Residential advisors (RA), they get a single. As you probobly know they're the authority on your hall.
-D'lion(s): D'lions usually share a double, however some halls have d'lion singles (which I am in.) becuase of how the halls are layed out.
-Freshman Fellow(s): The freshman fellows get a single for the most part.

I might post later the differance between D'lions and Freshman fellows because that was extremely confusing to me when I was first here. But i think this post is long enough
-Residential Advisor (RA) they get a single on every wing of every hall,

Never mind, I have nothing better to do right now.

More accuratly I don't want to edit my paper and tommorow is D-Day the largest campus wide party of the year and it's going to be beautiful out.

A story on the differance between the D'lions and Freshman Fellows

once upon a time...

not.

So to start out with, I am a D'lion on Gilbert 3 Long. I will live on Gilbert 3 long next year starting in August. I currently reside in Gilbert 3 West so it won't be such a big transition for me. The D'Lion organization has been part of the UR for at least 50 years. It is an organization, that is rare on college campuses, that is dedicated to helping freshman orient themselves in a new environment.

On top of that, we are an organization that provides a variety of services to the UR community as well. We host 3 blood drives, guest lecturers, community service programs, and a variety of other programs.

All of the D'lions have lived in freshman dormitories and enjoy being studetns at UR. We want to bring a nice, social, workable, healthy atmosphere to freshmans and around campus. But mostly freshman becuase we'll be living with you guys.

We are educated in a variety of fields so we can provide academic support as well if needed, I am Medicine and economics. I know others in the organization who are music majors, english majors, political science majors, etc. We have the capabilities to provide those things. However, as I will discus later, the "Freshman Fellows" are also there to provide that service and technically should be referred to first as they have training in this matter.

We also run social programs for the hall that can be going to a RPO concert, going to waterstreet msuic performance hall (the rock, heavy metal, sort of thing), ice skating, eating out at some of rochester's really great restaurants, visiting a mueseam, and many many other things.

We know the campus very well and have connections to various professors and other groups and informations as well.

Plus a lot of us are involved with various other student organizations, so if you want information about that, we can help you there as well.

Technically speaking we are a "special interest housing" group." however over the past 50 years we have expanded from just living and helping freshman adjust to being the sort of support group for anyone who needs help.

I'd like to be the first person you would come to ask for help, advice, or maybe just to talk to. I know what it's like to come to college and experiance the sudden freedom and sometimes get a little laxed, or face incredible academic challenges (which you will face if you take Bio 112 and 113). Just come and bother us D'lions when you need us. Becuase we'll be there for that.

Oh and we usually leave free food in the study lounges and you can always come into my room and grab a bite or use my microwave. We provide nice things like that too.

Now as for Freshman Fellows.

They're a new organization, similar to D'lions but have a distinct role on Freshman halls. They are there to provide academic support. They take a class and are trained to help you with a wide variety of academic things. If your not used to Excel, they're actually well trained in that.

But their role and goals are strictly limited to academic support. I'd like to think of them as the resident nerd. But a few of my friends are Fellows and they are really cool and friendly as the D'lions.

Just to get this out as well, both organizations are essentially under the control of "Reslife" since we get rooms in freshman dorms.

both organizations have an interview process like any other job as it is, if anything, a year long job.

Freshman Fellows are paid 500$ a semester and live in singles.
D'Lions are not paid, which I think makes us a group that is really motivated to help you guys out. We live in doubles and singles depending on the building and hall.

Oh there isn't a double with a guy and a girl in it. Actually that's the reason why I'm in a single in Gilbert. Beside my absolute love for the Gilbert dorm my D'lion partner is a girl so we both got singles. (Good plan eh?)

Oh, I should clarify that. There are two d'lions per hall unless you live in Gilbert 1 or hoeing 4 i think. In Gilbert, 2 D'lions manage Short and East (which are wings in Gilbert) and another two manage Long and West. In Hoeing, I think there are 2 per floor, becuase they are "smaller." In Sue B there are two per wing, which puts a total of 8 per floor.

I think that covers that.

Again, as a D'lion, I and any other D'lion are here to help you guys out. In any way. Plus on move in, we carry all of your stuff to your room so it's really not that bad. you just need to get to know your roomie and decorate accordingly or somethign like that.

So enjoy this excessively long post and say hi to me sometime. If you find yourself in Gilbert, let me know and I'll put you in touch with your D'lions, or if your in Gilbert 3 Long (which is all guys) or Gilbert 3 West (all girls) say hi to me and Perrine (we're your D'lions).

are there any programs at rochester that make room and board free? I know you mentioned RAs. Are these programs real time intensive, can you balance classes and being a d'lion? Thanks alot in advance.

Balancing being a reslife person and academic really isn't that bad.

I mean it seems like a lot, but in reality, I'd like to think I'm just another guy living on your hall that you can just come up to and ask for help, talk to, play video games with (I'll kick your ass at Natural Selection, Starcraft, or Counter strike), and go to a few meetings to plan things for the organization.

I can explain more if you wnat here, since the D'Lion application is at least 11 months away for you.

RA's is free. Freshman Fellow is 500$ a semester.

Yeah i know living here is expensive, but college life is worth every penny of it...if you could skip the meal plan somehow....

Any other programs....well technically Fraternity life is different, but I don't think that's free either.

Oh, but in case your interested in this sort of thing, there's usually ample housing off campus for like 500$ a month or less if you split it. That usually includes, utilities and off stree parking.

I'd go for being an RA sometime soon. But the position is extremely competative.

I'd like to say more, but posting it here might be inappropriate, so get in contact with me through aim or something and i'll let you know about a few more things that technically I may not be allowed to say.

alright, i'll hit you up a little later this weekend, thanks alot for your help. btw freshman fellows get paid 500 a semester right, not room and board is 500$ a semester?

Hello Arthur,
I'm only a junior, so I am not in the position to decide on UofR or anything, but can you tell me:
how hard is it to get multiple majors at UofR? This is definately something that I would like to do...
You fence? that is exciting. How good is the fencing club/team at UofR or do you fence somewhere else, and where? Oh, and foil is so much better than sabre...
Is Uof R unbearable cold (for someone from Texas)? I would probably go anyway, but I want to know.
Er...anything else, rather?? hmmm...

Hi Idamayer,

Ah don't worry about whehter your a junior or not.

A lot of majors at the UR are "short" 12-15 courses required by a major, with the exception of BCS which i think by itself is 20 plus labs. So a lot of people double major, i know a few that triple majored. Heck I know a friend who majored in Cello Perfomacne at eastman and biology at UR. So it's reasnable.

yeah our fencing team competes a bit as a club sport. It's a lot of fun.

And I know a couple of people from texas and they're not too bothered by the weather. It's not that unbearable cold. I mean, you put on a coat and your ok, because you end up in a building within 20 seconds unless your really masochistic and decide to walk around every building to get to class.

Yeah, double majoring isn't too terribly difficult. I mean maybe you have to take 5 courses a semester, but if you make up your mind early, you probobly won't have to.

Good luck with applications and what not. If you need any further help feel free to contact me.

why would you want to get a single anyway? it's so much more fun with a roommate. i'm interested in that apartment style housing...sounds cool to have ur own bathroom and stuff...yeah, make sure u get in touch with me if ur interested in that suite thing...

It wouldn't be THAT fun at all if you got a bad and nasty roommate! x0

Generally speaking, your roomie ends up being ok.

Really. My roommate when i first saw his profile on the web. I could tell he was a massive drinker and partied a lot. Completely in contrast with me. I thought we were going to be absolutely screwed up.

But as it turns out, most people here are really respectful of each other. So I mean if you set some ground rules at the beginning of the year and get to know each other even the really extreme differances can be overcome rather easily.

Don't forget, worst case is you move around within the dorm with otehr people. They'll accomdate that, it'll be a hastle but if you really can't stand your roommate that much they'll help you out.

haha tru...but always think optimistic...

dltprm, would you mind telling us your SAT scores and what colleges you turned down for URochester?

hey does anyone play ultimate frisbee? dlrprm, is ultimate fairly popular up there. Im a huge frisbee junkie, lol

Oh yeah, Frisbee is huge. We have teams that play. The details of the teams I'm not too sure about, but when it's nice out generally someone's playing ultimate.

As for my academic history.

5 for AP Comp Sci AB, Physics B, Calc BC, Biology, Macro and Micro Econ.
4 for AP World History (taken freshman year),
3 for AP language

SAT was on the old system, so my score is irrelavent

SAT II: Well to be honest. I don't remember anymore. haha. I took Math, Writing, Chemistry, and biology.

I turned down Cornell (one semseter gurenteed transfer), St Lawrence (full scholarship), and CMU to come here for the Biology program.

Do they offer financial aid for summer semester? As I plan to take a summer course, and will be living on campus, but the summer housing is quite expensive.

They should offer Financial aid. Although I am unsure. Actually if you are planning to take summer courses, I am a local and though I don't know you personally I'm willing to open up my house (after I check with a rent) so you can save a ton on living costs.

I am also taking summer courses and my mom works for the university so that is not much of an inconvinince. I know how much housing costs and there's absolutely no air conditioning in the dorms on campus so it'll be pretty crappy living even by UR standards.

lol. Thank you for your kind offer. Generally speaking, how hot is it during summer?
