Q: is it a mistake to value action over thought?
In the era where productivity is the key, it is understandable that more emphasis is place on action instead of thought. However, the validity of the opposition situation should not be dismissed by simply saying that the idea of taking time to reflect and think through is out of favor, because ultimately, actions serve as a mean to express and manifest one’s thoughts.
Taking the example of environment conservation, while much public advertisements are dedicated to raise the awareness, they can not be deemed efficacious if the idea is not reflected on one’s actions. The eminent film maker Hayao Miyazaki has similar notions about disseminating the importance of protecting the environment and has successfully transcended this thought into something more tangible, his movie, Princess Mononoke, which illustrates the severe ramifications of damaging the environment. When ideas are embodied vividly through screens, who is to say that Mr Miyazaki’ thought are not valued? Besides, the long lasting popularity of talk shows such as ‘the Oprah Winfrey Show’ too exemplifies the public interests towards thoughts.
Nevertheless, some may argue that sometimes actions do not reflect one’s genuine interest, thus making it inappropriate to value action over thought. For instance, in most cases of celebrities sensationalize toon, the behaviors of those stars are mainly made to influence public opinions rather than representing their true beliefs. This statement may seem valid but one’s actions are shaped via different stages. The inchoate stage would be the formation of thoughts where a specific motive is formed to explain certain actions. Even for intuitive actions, there will be a underlying purpose that drives the so called intuitions. Putting this in simple real-life situation, would anyone not doubt when an experienced athlete claims that doping is an inadvertent deed? Hence, actions are apparently linked closely to thoughts.
All in all, it is definitely not fallacious to focus more on action rather than thought. The more important thing is that we must think carefully before taking actions in order to well represent our ideas for the other to understand us better.
