Well, hmm, son just received SAT 2 scores and they were ... Pretty darned ordinary. Well below his SATs. Using the AI calculator on CC he is coming out mid 190s, so he is still in the band system, but these scores seem worrisome.

First we have been told SAT 2s are required to apply to several schools. Then we have also been told SAT 2 scores are "not considered" even though they are required. Any other helmet sport recruit parents out there with experience having "low" SAT 2s?

CC search function is not giving me much since the terms are so common, and I only specify helmet sports because it seems like most of the swimmers, runners and fencers etc. here usually have comfortably high stats and don't frequently run into this issue.

I did read somewhere on the net this morning that SAT 2s have a harsher curve overall since the pool of test takers tends to be a more elite group; on the other hand, I have also heard elite schools "like to see 700s" on all the subject tests. And those, he did not have. Not sure he can take them again or if it would be worth it if he just needs them to apply and/or "they are not considered."

Anyone have this situation and did you feel like it affected your child negatively in terms of their recruitment standing?

If SAT2s are required for admission…they are required for admission.
There is not a waiver for that for athletes.
Admission admits not coaches. Coaches can have a preference on recruits.

SAT2s are an achievement test and tease out whether a GPA is inflated…meaning if a kid has As in courses and does poorly on the SAT2, admissions knows then the course either lacked rigor or the grades were inflated.

SAT2s help admissions compare apples to apples with applicants.
Same holds true with APs. A kid who had high grades yet didn’t score a 4 or 5 on the AP tells Admissions about that AP rigor/grade inflation.

People will say their kid “doesn’t test well”, however these tests help Admissions (along with the school profile)

Frankly at the top schools HYP they are used for placement in classes, they might not get them out of a class(ie class credit)

If your student wasn’t happy with those scores, retake them…it is important.

PS… In our students recruiting package from HYP, they clearly stated SATs should be above 700s…as well as the SAT2s.

Thanks, fogfog, although looks like we are out of luck, varsity games scheduled on both the next test dates in the fall, and we are pretty set on going ED somewhere. Also, there really wouldn’t be anything else to take. The subject tests he took were the only ones really possible considering the courses he is in this year, and It seems inadvisable to have him take a subject test for a course he took over a year or two ago. Again, even if it were possible to get the tests in over the fall.

Fortunately looks like he still has very good options - for at least three of the schools he really likes his scores are perfectly in range even without football - but unless we get a good ACT back in a few days, the playing ground may have just shifted a little in terms of his reaches. I guess that is par for the course!

S was told by a top Ivy swim coach that SAT II scores can only help and not hurt your AI score. If this is true for all sports than your S lower SAT II score should not change his AI.

GingerPeach, are you looking at some Ivies? I would assume so because you are using the academic index. I recommend that if his ACT is high, submit that.
