I want to be a special ed teacher, and that would mean majoring in SPED in my undergrad. I'm from Massachusetts and I can't find any decent schools for SPED here.
Right now, I have a 3.6 weighted GPA, which will probably go up to a 3.75ish at the end of junior yr. I have a 29 ACT which I'm retaking for a 31ish hopefully :)
UMASS Amherst doesn't offer special ed degrees, and my mom basically flat out told me that they are willing to pay 50K per yr for my sister's med school, but unwilling to do so for me because I won't be making much :( So they want me to stay in state w/o flying expenses and all.
I've looked into majoring in math and getting certified to teach math, and then getting a masters in special ed. But I've heard that schools don't like to hire teachers w/o experience and with a masters because they are too expensive. Advice? Any schools in MA, or New England? Thanks so much :)

I know NY state is not in New England but I would suggest considering SUNY Geneseo. Take a look at the stats and you will see that it is an excellent public liberal arts school with a top-notch ED Dept that offers dual certification with SPED. Out of state cost is mid-20s. Admission is quite competitive but I believe you would get in. My daughter got in with a lower ACT but slightly higher GPA (she is not attending though). She was looking at elementary ED and SPED dual certification but I’m nearly positive that you could major in Math and also get SPED certification, all within 4 years. I think they may desire more OOS students for budget reasons and for more student diversification.

Thanks! Does you daughter like it there?

No. Geneseo was in her top three but did not make the final cut.
