Hello,
I'm (as the title of this thread implies) sorta clueless as to the classes I should take for my first semester at Duke. I am starting to regret not having applied for the FOCUS program, but I am hoping that this wont be the end of my world as I know it. Anyways, I was wondering if there were any recommendations out there for a rising English Major Psych minor. I was also wondering if a math course was absolutely necessary for an english major and if so, which math would be best for a student who gets a four on the calc AB AP exam (and whose BC score is likely to confirm her own suspicious that math is absolutely NOT for her...).
Anyways, I would greatly appreciate any advice...ie. professors to take/avoid, classes which are best taken early, requirements to leave for the end...etc...I will take ANY info you can offer...nothing is too insignificant...a young woman's FUTURE hangs precarously in the balance! (lol, I should have probably been a drama major)
:) Thanks again

I'm a fellow p-frosh, but I can help you out a bit. The English major wouldn't require math, but a psych minor might require stat courses.

As a Trinity student, however, you'll be required to take two courses in "Quantitative Studies," though that doesn't have to mean higher level math. Basically look through ACES or the Undergrad Bulletin for courses that have "QS" next to them that you think you'd be ok taking.

English major doesn't require math, and most English majors (even with good math placement) tend to avoid calculus, and get their QS through stat, intro to computer science, random other courses... I'd definitely take stat101 though because of Psych.

Take Intro to Psych in the fall because the professor is amazing and the class is easier than it is during the spring. You'll have to take English 90 in some form relatively early on because it's essentially Intro to English and most professors want their classes to be freshmen and sophomores. Also as an English major don't base your planning on the guide on the English department website because it's outdated. I unfortunately don't have my new major requirements with me, but you will have to take one of these classes: Intro to Cultural Studies (which the prof is amazing, but is full I think), Intro to Film (great! just looong), and Intro to Lingustics... to graduate. I would try and get that out of the way. Abnormal Psych is supposed to be great at Duke. I'm less familiar with psych requirements, but some awesome courses (like Psychology of Consumers) you need one psych class to take, and that department likes to build upon prereqs, and although you only need five to graduate and there certainly isn't any rush, I'd try and at least get Intro out of the way (especially in the fall).

Stats?! Oh great..the one math Ap that I DONT take and it ends up being the one I need for my major...any way I can ameliorate the ill effects this course will inevitably have on my grade point average?

IIRC, AP credits can't count for credit towards majors (only place you in higher level classes within the same subject for your major) so it's not like AP Stat would've helped that much. Just try to get the best prof possible, then figure out who the smart people are in your class, and bug them for help. :)

well, I meant that taking a few stats courses would have given me something of a base upon which to build after getting to Duke. But I wont even have that...so,...know any good professors? ::ahem:: you wouldn't happen to be a math kinda pfrosh would yah?

lol, well I don't like math but I can do it. For the professors, look at the course evaluations on ACES. You can also try to talk to people on campus to get an idea of which profs are the best.
