I’ve been admitted to UCLA as a Pre-Global Studies major (I have to pass their specified class during my first term in order to secure my place). Now that I’ve fully delved into UCLA’s Global Studies department and gone through everything I’ll need to do in order to finish my BA… I’m a bit overwhelmed. Frankly, I had a bit of a meltdown. My academic counselor at my community college did NOT prepare me very well. In regards to the departments language requirement, I am so far behind (my counselor had told me semesters ago that I was entirely finished with my language). That included me being finished at the UC level as well. Along with that rude awakening, I’ve come to discover that UCLA’s Global Studies is geared towards an entirely different facet of the major… One that least interests me. Global Studies is the study of globalization which manifests in four spheres: political, economic, cultural and environmental. I gravitate primarily towards the cultural (much through the lens of sociology). I realize now that I may have chosen to declare the wrong major. Reading through all the curriculum is making me really uneasy. I’m not even interested in the upper division courses I’ll have to do. I’ve looked on their website, as well as scrolled through various discussion threads to find out if I can change my major. Everything that I’ve come across is unclear.
Since I’m not a solidified Global Studies major, can I change it before fall term starts? Can I change it at all?! I’m Pre-Global Studies, wishing to change to Sociology. Perhaps even double major in Sociology and Gender Studies with a minor in Global Studies. But that’s an entirely different subject.
PLEASE someone just tell me if I can still commit to UCLA if I no longer want to do Global Studies. I really want to be a Bruin, and I’m kicking myself for not researching their department earlier and realizing it wasn’t for me. I’ve already been at my community college for three years. I need to transfer.
