Help! Can I postpone a scholarship interview?

Hello all,

I have recently been selected as a semi-finalist for a scholarship at a top 10 liberal arts college which amounts to a full-ride (ballpark of 55k/year). Assuming my phone interview goes over well, they will invite me to come to campus for a final interview March 21-23. At the same time, my top tier state university (think UCLA, Wisconsin, Texas, Michigan kind of public U) has also selected me as a finalist for what amounts to a full-ride there as well (20k/year in-state + 2k in another scholarship I have from them already + possible 2500 in nat'l merit). The interview/selection weekend for this one is March 22-23. The two are on the same weekend. :(

Is there any way to postpone one of these events/choose between which to go to? Do you think they'd even consider me if I had to do a skype/postponed interview? Statistically, I'm at an advantage with the public university, as only 18 finalists (six get scholarship) were selected compared to the liberal arts college's eventual 25-30 finalists(I believe six get the scholarship).

I'm so torn between these schools, and I could use as much financial aid as possible. Please let me know if you have any input as to what you would do given my situation! My parents love both schools as much as I do, and I don't really know who to turn to for advice.

Thank you!

Do either of these schools have an active CC forum? You might be able to find out if the schools have accommodated students in the past by asking there. I know the school my D attends will make other arrangements for kids with other commitments during interview weekends.

Thanks for the response! Unfortunately, the small liberal arts college has almost no posts on its forum, so it doesn’t seem very active. Both say I have to attend the interview on March 22nd, and I really don’t know what to do!

I think you need to call someone on the scholarship committee for the college and find out if the interview can be postponed. If not, call the university with the same question. Hopefully someone will budge.

1.) Is it possible to do both if you book flights well? Is it possible to do one on Saturday and one on Sunday? Or, one in the morning and one at the end of the day?

2.) If not, then you need to decide which college you most want to attend and then call the OTHER one and try to arrange a different time for the interview. Be candid. Tell them you are honored to be considered. Tell them that you have two scholarship interviews on the same day and ask if there is any way to reschedule the interview. Explain that you know this may not be possible, and appreciate their consideration, but that financial considerations are a factor in your decision about which school to attend and you’d really like the opportunity to interview for both.

3.) If they say they can’t reschedule, then you should call the other school.
