here are my scores and achievements. what are my chances of getting into a good american college like berkeley, cmu, ucla, ucsd, or even ivies? I am male just to be clear.

-9th grade 85% and top 95th percentile in class.

    | Participation in debates and extempores plus a few awards in them.
    | Lead a debate/discussion event in the International Round Square Conference held by the United Nations Organization.
    | Volunteering in orphanages and old age homes
    | Was in clubs like the Social service club, Chess club, G.K. club, String art club.
    | I have my own organization for charity which specializes in providing clothes and free medical health care for the homeless and underprivileged villages in central india.
    | Was awarded the best CEO in the ‘I Can’ corporal political simulation conference.
    | Took part in a college Physics quiz and won 1st place against post grad and under grad students.
    | Prizes in inter school competitions of science, IT, and G.K, etc.
    | Cyber Olympiad Silver medalist.
    | Maths Olympiad Gold medalist.

Carnegie Mellon – decent chance
UCLA – fair to decent chance
Cal – fair chance
UCSD – good chance
Ivies – very remote chance

What do you want to study. With those Olympiad medals I would expect you to be competitive at the most competitive schools. I view the previous poster’s predictions as not quite understanding the significance of gold medals at the Olympiads.

The only problem is that your academic stats (though not bad at all) are not on par with your Olympiad Medals!

^ This.

uclaparent9 yeah, i know. but the 9th and 11th grade examinations are designed by the school itself so they tend to make it extra tough so that we are “motivated” to do better in our 10th and 12th (whose exams are designed by the board itself).

i would like to study computer science along with electrical engineering.

gandalf78 what can i do better to get atleast a decent chance in the ivies?

gandalf78 would a good essay help increase my chances?

OP, in all honesty I don’t have any good suggestions about what you can do to increase your chances of getting into the Ivies, beyond getting your ACT and SAT scores and your grades up; I would say that you would have a better chance of admission to the Ivies if you have a 35 or 36 on the ACT, and a 2300+ on the SAT. Caveat – even perfect ACT or SAT scores are no guarantee of admission to the Ivies.

Also, if you want to study computer science and electrical engineering, then within the Ivy League you might want to focus on MIT, Cornell, Columbia, and Princeton; additionally, you might want to look at Georgia Tech, University of Michigan, and University of Illinois-UC.

Finally, if you are in the 12th grade now, when are you planning on matriculating at a university? If in the Fall of 2016, you are too late for applying to the schools you mention.

gandalf78 Thank you so much for your explanation… in india my 12th grade started in february (i know, its weird) so technically according to the “american” school year, im in my junior year, (im in the class of 2017). So ill be applying in november and january for the class of 2021.
