I'm currently a high school senior that's going to apply for UT ChemE. I originally was aiming for Engineering Honors Program, but lately some people have been telling me UT won't even look at someone who has a low SAT score. I'm even concerned if I can get into UT with my desired major...

My SAT scores are my biggest drawback, because they aren't that great (same with PSAT). Total SAT score: 2190. Math+CR: 1430 (780 Math, 650 CR).

Class Rank: (My school is infamously competitive and challenging, and UT does know our school pretty well.)
GPA weighted: 4.4-4.5, Top 6-7%. That was for up until only half of 11th grade, though. My grades got better, so my rank will probably continue to go up.

I take all AP courses (more to come this year):
US History- 4
Chem- 5
Calc AB- 5
Chinese- 5
English- 4
World History- 4

I've been in band for all 4 years, competed in various competitions with my marching band and soloing on flute. I also play the piano (12-year history), and I also have won some awards here and there.
I have a student leader position in band, too, continuing on 2 years.

I volunteered last summer at a hospital for 88 hours.

My most unique asset is the fact that I interned at a chemical company this summer.
I also have a letter of recommendation from them- should I use that letter for both applying to UT and applying to UT Engineering Honors?

So. Should I take the SAT again? I really want to avoid that, though. Besides, does UT accept the "super-score" on the SAT? Please HELP! D;

I’d definitely retake, a 2190 is bad…In all seriousness, how is that mediocre?

Lol that SAT score is in the top 1% of everyone that takes it-- maybe not as mediocre as you think? Dunno anything about your school of choice, but you can always look up the averages for any school and see where you fall-- if you’re far above them then you probably won’t need to retake? : ).

Also, if you set up something good as mediocre and even add that in the title, it will turn people off from everything else you say because it delegitimitizes yourself if you are truly seeking help (in my opinion-- dunno if others feel that way).

Really? UT Austin and you’re worried with a 2190? Uh, yeah, you’re fine.
Chance me on ’ Chance me for Ivies? '

Me… Mediocre? Surely you jest! 2190 is not a mediocre score. Maybe to CC, where everyone has a 2400 and has cured at least seven major diseases before graduating high school, such a score is terribly low. However, I echo the sentiments of the user who said that you scored in the top 1%.

Focus more on Subject Tests and EC’s, I’d say. Remember that there is so much more to an application than just the SAT/ACT score!

You definitely need to retake if you want any shot at going to your local community college. I doubt ITT Tech would even look at your application until your SAT is 2300+.
Your SAT score is stellar. All silliness aside, I think you need to improve your Vocabulary skills. I don’t think you know the definition of mediocre.

I thought you seemed smart on here until you started to complain about a 2190 score. 1500 is the nations average. Do some research before coming to conclusions

honestly, i think you will get it. You are an automatic admit, and you SAT isn’t too bad either.

UT doesn’t super-score. They consider your highest test score in one sitting.
Like I said in my other post, if you’re aiming for Engineering Honors, you should aim for a 1500 Cr+M. It used to be a must to get into EHP, before UT started holistic review. Still, it is the desired score for Engineering Honors, and you will be rewarded more in Cockrell scholarships with a higher SAT score.
