Help Choosing Between Summer Programs?

Hey,

I was admitted to two different summer programs this summer that coincide with each other, and was wondering if you'all could give some advice as to how I should consider which one to choose.

The first one is the Bill of Rights Institute Constitutional Academy from July 15-20 in Arlington and we visit Washington DC. From what I understand, it's a week full of touring historic sites, museums, and participating in lectures about politics, economics, history, and the Constitution. The program in itself is free; I only pay for airfare.

The second is the Carleton College Summer Quantitative Reasoning Institute from July 14-August 2. It focuses on math in relation to social sciences including economics, psychology, and international relations. The full cost is $2850, but I got a $500 scholarship and the program director just emailed me to let me know he would try his best to find additional sponsors to help pay for my costs.

In college, I plan on studying Applied Math with an emphasis on Economics or Finance (both International-focused). So if you guys know which program is a better program overall (from past experiences), or what I should be considering to decide which one to choose, that would be awesome! Thanks!!

Hey! I actually got accepted into the Constitutional Academy as well! I’m dead set on attending, because I really want a career in International Law and Politics. But since you’re so math-based, I’d say the Carleton College opportunity would probably be most beneficial to you.

At this point, I’m probably preferring Constitutional Academy b/c it’s cheaper and I really don’t want my parents to pay any money. So I’m assuming I’ll see you there (: which would be AWESOME.
And just noticed - you got into UChicago? Congrats - that’s one of my top-choice schools. (Awkward if you didn’t get in and I misread…)

Ahhh I see. Finances play a huge part in deciding things like these. Well, I guess I’ll be seeing you in D.C, which I know is going to be an amazing experience!

Oh and thanks, I did get in! :slight_smile: If you plan on applying next year, I can’t stress how important it is to make sure your test scores/grades/essays are in line early on so you can apply Early Action-- it helps a TON. :)

I’m really looking forward to it, although it’s going to be hot!

Yeah, I plan on applying Early Action b/c I already have an impressive ACT score (36) and great grades (valedictorian), but I’m not great with essays, so that’s what I’m nervous about. (:

I guess I may see you both at the constitutional academy in July.

I will be attending as well! :slight_smile: Has anyone started reading the texts? I just started mine…

I have read The Law excerpt.

We should all unite as the CCer club.

This is awesome to “meet” people beforehand. Am I allowed to know your names??

I haven’t started reading my texts (haven’t had time at all.) How are they? Are they difficult reads? What’s your recommendation as to what to read first?

Def the free one-
It’ll save you some money and free programs are more meaningful for college apps, it means you didn’t just buy your way into the program

@roxy481

Thanks for the recommendation (: I did choose the free one, not only because it’s meaningful but more because I didn’t want my parents to spend any money. If you have the opportunity in the future and the subject fits, I would definitely recommend you to apply for the Constitutional Academy.

I love CC! Always finding out about new programs, etc. I just checked out the Constitutional Academy. i think my DS would’ve loved this but it’s too late (he is going to UCONN in the fall) but maybe my DD would like it for next summer. Also, love that it is free!

ConfusedMom: I am not sure whether college students can do it.

Fotogenik: We could add each other on Facebook. They are pretty easy reads. I read the 2 Federalist Papers in my AP Gov class so I already understood them. The Constitution is easy and so is the D of I. The Law was moderate.

IwillkillforMIT-I realize that. it is too late for my son (he is entering UCONN in the fall) but my daughter is a rising junior. she could apply for summer 2014.

Sorry, I am still getting used to the abbreviations.

I just finished the Federalists papers and The Constitution. Almost done with the law, and will probably do the D of I on the plane to D.C. Can’t wait to meet you all and everyone else soon! 9 more days :)

ladylikeliz: we should totally meet each other.

@IWillKillForMIT
haha sure, on Facebook. But I can’t add you without knowing your name :P

I’m incredibly excited to meet you all! You know when you had to choose what track/seminar you were planning on doing (I don’t remember them, exactly…) but anyways, which did you choose as your top choices?

I chose law (go figure!) :P
