Hey all, so I am thinking of applying Early Admission to UChicago. I really want to set up an interview with the school because I've heard that it increases your chances of being accepted? Is this true? If it's not that worth it, then it might be hard convincing my parents to fly me over there...let me know what's up...

Doing an interview does not particularly help or hurt your chances. I imagine it can make a small difference, but I can’t see it making or breaking an application. It is a good idea to do one simply because it will give you a more holistic view of the school, and the kind of people that thrive there. Also, you don’t have to fly to Chicago to do an interview, that just wouldn’t make sense. You can set up an alumni interview after you complete and send in your application.

For my daughter, the on-campus interview with an admissions officer made a huge difference. It told them that they really wanted her, and it told her that she really wanted U Chicago. If you can do it, go. (Though if you can’t go, be assured that there are other ways to figure out the best place for you to be and for admissions offices to identify you as well.)

Haha, I could go on and on and on about my interview and why I think you should get one…but I’ll save your ears the bleeding. There is a similar interview post below this one, so check out what people said there.

Definitely want to get an interview…I mean you don’t need it, and I don’t think it necessarily helps/hurts you (Unless you are a super extreme) but it personalizes your application a bit and shows the school how dedicated you are. Like…I could have gotten an off campus interview in Philly, but I chose to fly down (Ofcourse it was technically like a summer vacation and I had a TON of fun in Chicago, so it wasn’t all a business trip) and go to campus. I think that was more for seeing the actual campus and getting that feeling for the school (Some I knew right away that I did not want to go to, others I knew after stepping out the car that I wanted to apply, Chicago being one ofcourse!)

That being said, I suggest you take a flight down sometime…since summer is over and I don’t know your economic situation, I guess it’ll be a little more difficult now (Especially with the winter coming, oh no! Just kidding, I LOVE the snow XD I’d go to Alaska if I could (And I probably will)) Can you have double parenthesis?! I need to ask my Lit teacher that sometime. Sorry, I’m easily distracted Dx

Anyways, I tried so hard not to make this long and overbearing but I failed…again! D: There’s something about talking about UChicago/colleges in general that makes me ramble on aimlessly. Ah well, hope you found what you are looking for or that you will very soon :D

Thanks everyone! I guess I will go for the interview after all. Hopefully it will help ‘make’ my chances and not ‘break’ them haha. I am kind of excited now, I’ve heard they ask you weird oddball questions like about magic pens and stuff…

Haha, good to hear! (I’m very tempted to say the classic, ‘That’s the spirit!’ and give you the thumbs up :P)

I don’t know about magic pens or anything of the sort O_o but then again, I did most of the talking at my interview xD I’m starting to wonder if that was a good or bad thing…I would have enjoyed some crazy mind-boggling questions like magic pens Contemplates Haha.

But in all seriousness, I can tell you a tiny little story (I’ll try to keep it brief, but no promises!) about my experience with the interview. I was fretting all night beforehand, sitting upright on a hotel bed (The Intercontinental, which was like heaven :P) discussing some questions with my mother and my aunt. I had heard that someone was asked “If you could have dinner with any three famous dead people, who would they be and why?” Thought as hard as I could, I could still not produce an answer. So I took the opportunity to brainstorm with my fam, and came up with atleast one general answer to the Q: Pavarotti because of my absolute love of Opera and classical music (I can honestly say that I sob whenever I hear him singing Ave Maria), A man named Antonin Artaud (If anyone has ever heard of him, I give you mucho mucho kudos!) who was an actor, a writer, and a schizophrenic. I’m very interested in psychology and human behavior, and I have never read such complex writings…I definitely recommend his Anthology if you have the stomach for it!, and Claude Debussy, who was a famous composer (Because I read a biography called Clair de Lune that was absolutely fantastic which inspired me to take up the keyboard and compose my own pieces of music).

Ofcourse, after having repeated my answer so that I would be ready when the question arised, prepared but not too quick to answer, I fell into a deep peaceful slumber. Needless to say, the interviewer did not ask such a question.

And for just a funny, ironic tidbit…I was thinking about applying to University of Virginia, but not 100% sure. I took a glimpse at the Universitys supplement essay prompts…and guess what I saw? That’s right. My jaw dropped. Hehe :P

So the point of my mumbling is to not over think it! Just answer honestly and passionately, and you’ll be a-ok :P

That’s awesome! I love Pavarotti and Debussy <3 I was totally thinking of applying to UVA as well, that’s so weird! Which college are you leaning towards? or which one did you end up going to?

Woot woot! Haha, atleast I know I’m not completely alone then! XD Feel free to use them if you’d like if your interviewer happens to ask you the golden q :P

I have a rather medium (Atleast I think so) sized list of colleges that I’m applying to, and as it is coming down to the wire (As my mother likes to remind me on a daily basis) I don’t feel that I know enough about UVA to apply, and it would be quite a gamble to go there blindly (Although I admit I haven’t visited all the schools that I’m applying to, although I do know quite a bit about all of them!) That being said, I’m not applying to UVA, and my list includes : UofC early action, University of Rochester, Vassar College, University of Illionis Urbana-Champaign, Syracuse U, Princeton U, Brown U, and Penn State U.Park. I’d be curious to know what other colleges you are applying to etc etc. I was looking into UWisconsin-Madison but it ended up being huuuuge so I dropped it.

I have visited UofC and I must tell you that I have fallen in love, honestly. I also visited Northwestern U during my trip to Chicago, and although it is a great school and has a beautiful campus, I knew right away that it wasn’t a match for me…UofC really really impressed me. And my tour guide was AWESOME! So if you do go for a campus tour, make sure you go with Marcella (I hope that was her name :S)

So I’m crossing fingers that I get into UofC, but if all else fails, I can always go to UofC for Grad school. :)

As of right now I know for sure that I want to apply to UVA, U of C, University of Washington (instate benefits), Boston College, Carnegie Mellon, and College of William and Mary. All of these (besides U of Washington) are stretch schools for me. I really have no idea how it will turn out =/

Best of luck to you though! Maybe U of C will be nice and let us in :)

Ahh, I was looking into applying to some Western schools, including some in Washington and California (Berkeley!) but alas, my poor old parents thought it was quite too far (I’m from PA :P) But I do want to get out of the East Coast zone and atleast make it to the Midwestern area. Actually, visiting Chicago was my first time in the Midwest and I think I’m in love haha :p

Anyways, it’s all a roll of the dice ya know. Just keep your chin up and I’m sure you’ll be just fine! (That’s what I tell myself anyways, to try and ease my way into forthcoming heartbreak if I’m rejected from UofC) and as my mother says with her cheesey fortune cookie ways, “Wherever you go, there you are.” Meaning, you’ll end up where you are supposed ta be :P

Thank you and g’luck to you as well! It would be very awesome if we both got in :)

haha, the West Coast rocks! You should think about it, definitely less cut throat in my opinion:) But yeah, my sister went to Northwestern in Chicago so visiting the city was always a BLAST, esp in the winter lol! I heart Chicago How is PA though? Do you know anything bout Carnegie Mellon? --I’m still researching.

I really did want to go out West. I’ve been to San Fran in Cali as well as Las Vegas (I was 4, so I don’t really remember that much about it =( )

I visited Chicago Aug. 4-8 so I didn’t get to experience the snow I looove snow and I love the cold, but my mother doesn’t share my passion (She wants to move to Florida with the rest of my family :P)

I also visited Northwestern U! Evanston was gorgeous, and the school was great, but I don’t think it was a personal match for me. Chicago the city was very impressive, however. Seriously, it was very refreshing for spending most of my life outside of Philly :p

PA is quaint. I live in a pretty nice suburb, not too much goes on here but it’s not a rural small town by any definition. Just not the hustle and bustle of the big windy city is all. About a half hour drive from where I live will end you up near Lancaster with all the Amish people (Which is always a great thing to do on a Sunday, a nice drive through the country!) but I also live near Delaware, not too far from Maryland or New Jersey either. So where I live is a pretty nice area, close to all sorts of different places to explore.

As for Carnegie Mellon, I do have family up in Pittsburgh and we visit sometimes (About 1~2 a year for holidays or what not) but I haven’t been to the campus. I was contemplating applying there, but I’m not very fond of Pittsburgh to be honest. I wish I had something to give you about the school, but I don’t know very much about it at all…I’m sorry! :(
