UR is compact. The gym and some of the athletic fields are tucked right into the main campus, next to the library and Commons. The science buildings are right up against the back edge of the traditionally designed Academic Quad. Some of the housing is a few minutes away, notably South, but most of the school is right there.

Yeah, Potsdam gets Canadian weather; all the air that goes above Lake Ontario and all that comes down from Hudson’s Bay. Noticeably colder. Lots of kids in school there though, which must help, though now crossing the border to go to Montreal is more of a pain.

I remember thinking New Haven was always dark and gloomy. And it certainly rains a lot in winter in Connecticut. I come from Michigan, which stays light about an hour later, so when it gets darkish at 3:30 in the afternoon, it feels like something’s wrong. Rochester stays light about 25 minutes longer than Boston. You notice that extra light.

I’ll chime in here…I grew up in Oswego County (between Rochester and Syracuse) and have lived in Rochester for 25 years. UR is a wonderful university for a variety of reasons. From the Eastman School to the Medical School to Engineering to Simon School of Business-- it has a wonderful reputation and is such a huge asset to our community.
A note on Potsdam-- I would not send my worst enemy to Potsdam for college. Sorry but it’s just to darn cold and there’s just not a lot to do. Rochester can be a great town if you take advantage of all the things to do.
Our weather is gray in the winter. No doubt. But I really don’t think it’s that different than Boston or NY. Just a bit more snow some years.
If you can get in and you can afford it-- UR is a great place.

We have yet to have a significant snowfall, though the forecast for this week looks promising. Quite honestly, the amount of snow and the severity of winter often changes from year to year. We had snow this time last year - yesterday I was outside raking leaves and working up a sweat. Come evening, I had a fire in the fireplace and a nice cup of hot cocoa to keep warm. I love it!
