Hi, I can't decide between duke, Barnard and nyu... Which do you think is a) most prestigious. B) get me a better job on wall street and C) should I consider Barnard kind of like Columbia, since technically (quote from wiki) is an official college of Columbia u.. Help please deadline may 1st!
Thanksss

I already declined nyu and Vassar

Barnard is separate from Columbia College and you won’t have the same sort of recruiting opportunities that Columbia College undergrads are going to have when it comes to job hunting. Duke is much, much, much better than Barnard at sending students to Wall Street. There is absolutely no comparison here with regards to prestige and Wall Street placement.

You’re comparing one of the 10 best universities in the country with a Columbia offshoot that is ranked significantly lower.

The thing is I talked to a bunch of professors and they all told me Barnard is better and it’s basically like Columbia, and its in ny… So you would say duke is def more prestigious than barnard? But if you count Barnard as Columbia (diploma is signed by both), then not…mahhh I hate this decision it makes no sense and everyone tells me something else! Please help me thing is I love both colleges for different reasons and it’s equal right now on my list so the 2 deciding factors are prestige and a wall street job… If I go to duke can I get an internship in the summer in NY? Or is it really difficult?

I don’t think you should go to a school just because people tell you it’s “better.” Is prestige seriously all that people care about? If you go to a prestigious school and don’t do well, the name will only get you so far…

And Barnard is definitely NOT Columbia, though it may be closely affiliated. I know people that pretend they go to Columbia University when they actually go to Barnard–and it can be kind of annoying. If you’re going to such a great women’s college, at least be proud of the fact.

Anyway, I’m going to Duke next year, and I think it’s going to be great. I hope you have fun wherever you end up going.

Thanks… Also which Is better for grad school? Wanna go to harvard business school… And are internships in NY during the summer hard to get?

Why did you deny NYU stern? I it is one of the best schools for IB. Its pretty much and analyst factory because you can land so many internships and eventually offers.

I idiotically clicked something wrong on the app, applied like the day before in the middle of the night and was accepted at nyu but not stern hahha. Please note, I’m not ■■■■■■■■ hahaa

Help plaeaaaseeeee

Getting a job in NY coming out of Duke is not something you should even be slightly worried about. It’s where the majority of grads go. There is no contest here. Unless you really prefer the womens college environment, Duke is the obvious choice here if you desire to do investment banking. Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and Merrill are our top employers. They probably don’t even set foot onto Barnard.

Speaking of graduate schools placement, I think there’s a survey in WSJ sometime back that rank Duke no.6 in the nation for being a feeder school to prestigious (read: HYPMS) professional schools.

And honestly, if you care about prestige (which I believe should not be an all-important factor in choosing a college), there’s really no comparison between Barnard and Duke.

Barnard is not Columbia. The relationship between the two is much closer than between other neighbor schools, right down to the dual signature on your degree, but the two are not the same. Students who think they are will be disappointed to find some of Columbia’s doors closed to them, including recruitment opportunities.

And while your career interests may very well change, Duke is unequivocally the best of your options for IB placement.

Lol in high school and already wanting to go to HBS

i don’t really know anything about barnard so i can just talk about duke and nyu, since I’ve also been in manhattan for 3 months one summer. Obviously, nyu practically blends in with the city (a better way to say it is that it conforms to the street grid, I suppose) whereas duke is it’s own separate entity, in a way. Duke is a pedestrian campus. It’s really meant to be walked and admired. This is different from many other universities. Prestige-wise, it depends on the program. Duke Engineering in my opinion is stronger, and I don’t even think nyu has some of the engineering departments duke does. Personally, I would not go to nyu because you get a much, much greater sense of “self” and camaraderie at Duke. Anyone will tell you that. NYU kids do their thing, and Duke kids do their thing but they usually are more together.
