So last night when I wanted to finish up my common app, the common app site informed me on the login page that all deadlines were 11:59 pm our local times. So, living in Chicago (central time) I went to submit my app at 11:00 pm. However, when it went through and I looked at my application PDF, it all said that I submitted 11/2. Then looking at my common app page it said I submitted 12 am eastern (Michigan) time and thus I missed the deadline. I called Michigan and they said it was “their discretion” if I get processed early action or not, and that I “should’ve known that I’m a time zone away”. I got some really rude operators. Anyways, I was wondering if this happened to anyone else in a different time zone than Michigan. I was also wondering what I should do, because I’d really like to be considered in the early action round and Common App screwed me up a lot by saying my deadlines were all in my local time!! Any suggestions on where to go from here?
@njk1999 - 1. I think you should contact Common App and let them know of this. 2. Try emailing your area’s counselor (https://admissions.umich.edu/contact-us). 3. In future, try not to wait till last minute. Also, when emailing or calling, try using a lot of please’s and thank you’s.
Accept that it is their discretion, and that it is your fault that you missed the deadline. I get it…time zones are tricky. But why were you waiting until the very last minute? Don’t mean to rub salt in a wound, but pretending you’re not accountable for your own mistake won’t help.
For what it’s worth, I hope they show some mercy and process you early action.
Best wishes, and good luck.
