I'm a sophomore biology major (with a concentration in marine biology) planning to go to graduate school in biological oceanography. I had originally planned to take a standard biology elective this semester, but the opportunity to do an independent research project in my area of interest just fell into my lap. As a sophomore, would it be better to take a biology class or the independent study? I don't want to scrimp on my coursework, but I don't want to pass up a great opportunity either (both count for the major).

I would recommend the research opportunity...
one more or one less biology class won't make a bit of difference to a graduate admissions committee... but any evidence that you can succeed at independent research is a big plus... it shows that you have interest in the field beyond just taking classes... as an added bonus, you may be able to get a great letter of recommendation as well.

I vote for the research.

Thanks for the input. My advisor's at the Marine Lab, so it's hard to get advice quickly. :/

Do indy studies.

Try your best to always have really nice manners when working with the Professor.

Be sure to allude to the work you did in indy studies on your grad school apps.

good luck!
