Not sure fi this is the right place to ask but...

Can someone explain to me how you apply or become elegible for this award/scholarships?
I thought that it depended on your PSAT score, but now I heard something about the SAT score and some sort of threshold being ~2000. Do I need both, good PSAT and SAT scores to qualify? I didn't even have an idea of what NMSC was until recently, so I was curious if I could apply (PSAT of ~191, SAT of 2150).

Thanks for the help!

@FriskySquirrel…You don’t apply for the National Merit Scholarships. A student’s PSAT score from their junior year will qualify them for participation in the competition if it meets or exceeds your state’s cutoff score, but if your score was 191 it unfortunately would not qualify regardless of what state you live in.

You can check out the thread regarding qualifying scores for 2015 graduates here (post #3054 has a list of this year and previous years cutoffs). The national cutoff score for Commended status this year was 203.

If you are African American or Hispanic, it’s possible that your PSAT score might qualify for the National Achievement or National Hispanic scholarship competitions. Those programs have different cutoff score criteria than National Merit.

Thanks! I did get a National Hispanic award, I was just curious about the NMS as I had no idea what it was.

Congratulations on the National Hispanic Recognition award!! There are some great opportunities for you scholarship-wise through NHRP depending upon what schools/types of schools you’re interested in. =D>
