My Stats
SAT : 2050
CR: 630 W: 680 M: 740 ( Could have done much better).
Math 2: Possibly 800 ( surely 750+)
Physics and Chemistry no idea. I'll update later.
GPA: Around 3.3
ECA: Some social work and then Black Belt in Judo.
I want to study engineering ( preferably mechanical) but computer or general engineering colleges will do.
TOEFL Scores: Above the minimum requirement for Universities.
I also need financial aid. I can pay in the range of $5 to $5.5k a year. Not a penny more than $6k.
Can you guys please help me find colleges. Colleges ranging from safeties to long shots to good shots (Preferably safeties).
I am from just under the Himalayas by the way Nepal!!
Your help would be much appreciated.
Thank You

With a 3.3 GPA you’re not likely to get full ride scholarships to many schools, especially since you’re an international student. You’ll need a full ride scholarship in order to have your costs under 6k a year.

I can’t offer any suggestions of schools to you, but am interested to see what everyone else says. The only thing that comes to mind is community college.

I’m not sure about the GPA.

I’m not sure about the GPA. I don’t know how they convert it. But my percentage in 1st two years of high school ( grade 9 and 10) is 82% and in the last two years ( grade 11 and 12) is 66%. I just guessed and put 3.3. Could be less could be more. Help if you have any idea!!

Your GPA is even lower than a 3.3 then. Next time, please put the grades on your transcript as they are reflected. I’ll stay tuned and try to find someone that can help you out!

Thank you for popping my bubble minohi. I appreciate it. I’ll be more flexible regarding the financial aid and try my best in the subject tests. But I don’t think the GPA is calculated through basic arithmetic of the percentage. I believe there are other factors determined by the country of your education that affect the GPA calculation. However mine are still low I guess so I’ll keep my feet on the ground and move ahead.
My marks are: Physics 65
Chemistry 67
Maths 50
English 74
Biology 71
Nepali 74

What do these grades mean? In the US, they mean you’re about to be kicked out of school due to lack of effort and lack of results. Those are considered very very very bad grades. However in some countries, they’d be considered top 10% (except for math, which would be considered okay).
You can’t really convert numerically. Numbers have a specific value that aren’t the same in all countries. Help us understand if you’re a good student and what thos results would mean in your country.

Well to put into perspective, my college (Grade 11 & 12) is one of the finest in the country with the acceptance rate of 6.25% (500 out of 8000). We had to compete in an entrance exam and a ceremonial interview. So, dare I say, I am considered, relatively speaking, a smart student. In my school (grade 9-10) I was the smartest in my section (about 40 classmates, and we had 10 such sections in a class so it is pretty hard to say the same thing for the entire class) and I won’t have any problems with recommendations even with my college (grade 11 &12), where I did poorly. But when I got into college, I just stopped studying. Honestly speaking, I had never actually put much effort in my school as well but managed to do well because school was a lot easier. But in college I got exposed and since you can’t get through college without putting a genuine effort, I did very poorly as I was often very careless and lazy.

Speaking of my grades, well, here I guess it is one of those countries where, as you said, these grades are considered OK and if you are asking the NATIONAL percentile, it should be above 90%.
But the problem is my grades are considered below average in my college and I don’t know how big a part will it play in determining my GPA. I also asked the Education USA people and they said my GPA would probably be in between 3.2-3.5. But they weren’t sure as well and said I depended on the university sometimes. I do accept that it was a mistake not trying hard enough and that I am all to blame here. But I have now realized my mistakes and I am also considering making this development in me as a person the theme of my application essay. What do you think??

Just so you don’t get confused, till grade 10 it is considered school. Then grade 11 & 12 is called college in Nepal in which case you may choose to study in the same institution or as in my case go to another better college to study grade 11 & 12.

Also would it change much about my academics if I did well ( 750+ on my SAT subject tests (Math 2, Physics and Chemistry on DEC 6)??

Thank you in advance.

Tschool profile will be essential.
Since you’re attending a Science magnet school with national recruitment, even the lowest-level student is in the top 1% nationally.
That should preclude any ranking within the school? If they’re ranking you, it’d be like top 1% nationally for the bottom of the class, top 0.5% for the middle of the class, top 0.2% for the top of the class?

How do I present my school profile. This is great news if I’m considered among the top 1% but I’m really not sure if they see that way. And I it Tschool profile or just School profile?
Thank you very much. :)

For the School profile, you or your guidance counselor write a description of your school, indicating that only students in the top 1% on a national test are admitted and all are expected to get A’s in national exams for this, with marks in the …-… range indicating a top 1% performance, grades in the …-… range indicating top 5%, grades …-… indicating top 10% nationally, …-… top 10% regionally, …-…; top 20% regionally.
I would estimate your GPA, since it’s above top 1%, would be closer to a 3.9…

You have 1370 CR+M so you qualify for full tuition at UAlabama’s College of Engineering, but you need you apply TODAY (both application and scholarship application + Honors College Application) then apply to University Fellows or Computer Based Honors Program for more scholarships. Also, apply today or tomorrow to Howard, you’d also get full tuition plus room&board I think. Since it’s first come first served, the earlier you apply, the better.

It’s School Profile, sorry, it was a typo. Your guidance counselor will have to upload it on the CommonApp and detail your school’s details (recruitment process, national ranking, success/achievements, how big the grade deflation is, ie., a 60-65 at your school typically results in a … on national boards, etc.)
