Help find me a match

Hey everyone, new to this forum and I need all the help I can get.
I just got differed from SUNY Oswego and SUNY New Paltz, and I’m looking for a school I could have a solid chance at.
My GPA is terrible, 78.9 UW and 81 W.
32 Act first try.
Im in NYC, but I’m really looking to leave the city. Cost is not an issue. I also would like to major in comp sci, or something relative if possible. LMK if I need to add anymore info!
Thanks

GPA is very low… Around 3.5 when converted to a 4.0 scale. Not very appealing.

Reach
Dartmouth
Carnegie Mellon

Reach/Match
Tufts
Boston College
Emory

Match
University of Rochester
University of Michigan
Villanova
UC San Diego
SUNY Binghamton

Safeties
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Auburn
University of Connecticut

Your ACT score gets you a list of these schools… all in suburban/rural areas.

Thanks a ton

@bsdsj22 Most of the Reach, Reach/Match, and Match schools you listed aren’t actually good for OP. They got deferred from SUNY Oswego and SUNY New Paltz – how could they get into SUNY Binghamton, the premier school of the SUNY system? And really, CMU for CS with that GPA is not possible. Same with Dartmouth, Emory, and a bunch of other schools.

OP, take lists like that with a grain of salt. YOU need to work hard to find match, reach, and safety schools that are appropriate for your stats. Also keep in mind that CS is one of the most impacted majors in the nation right now, so most elite schools for CS will be insanely difficult to get into.

@BabylonBabylon so I should avoid applying for Comp Sci programs?

@zer0cool Not necessarily; if that’s what you want to do, then do it. But realize that it’ll be an uphill battle not only gaining entrance into a good school with your stats, but to gain entrance into a school for CS with your stats. And also realize that at top schools, CS kids will have many, many awards and a ton of experience under their belts. My brother goes to CMU and he says that the CS program is the most brutal academic program he could ever imagine. You have to really love CS to survive in it at top schools.

@BabylonBabylon well I goto an engineering hs and have a decent amount of experience in CS, but nothing on the level of kids at Carnagie. Would it make such a difference to change majors?

@zer0cool Whether or not to change prospective majors is eventually going to be your decision and your decision alone. Obviously I can’t say what’s best since I don’t know you, but consider having a conversation with your guidance counselor about options that are perhaps a little less competitive than CS. Of course, if CS is your passion and you can’t imagine doing anything else, then don’t give that up.

Go to a school where you will get a good GPA.
