HELP: How can I convince my parents?!?!?

Earlier in April I realized I was accepted into Wesleyan, Columbia, and Cornell. At first I thought the obvious choice I had to make was between Cornell and Columbia, but after visiting Wesfest, I knew that I belonged at Wesleyan. I fell in love with the people, the social life, and the academics! At Cornell and Columbia I felt so-so, I know that I can eventually be happy in either of these schools but it is not even comparable to how I felt at Wesleyan. Right now, I have narrowed my choice down to either Cornell or Wesleyan (only for my family's sake because I would send my deposit to Wesleyan in a heartbeat). My entire family wants me to go to ivy league b/c they feel that "when I get out of college, I will be competing with other students that have the exact qualifications as me, but they will have an edge if they go to an ivy league (recognized) school and I don't." Of course I know that this is not true, but I don't know how to prove their mentality is wrong! I'm asking you other parents for help since you are parents and your child might be in the same position I am. I have no idea how to prove to my family that Wesleyan is a great school and that I will have the same advantages going to Wes!

PLEASE HELP!! (sorry for the essay!)

You need to make a list of the REAL things offered by Wesleyan that will be advantageous to you. NO OPINIONS…just state the facts. Discuss this with your parents…I hope it works out for you.

thanks for the response… I’ll start creating a pros and cons list

If there are different financial aid packages in the mix, you should run a calculator as well. Here is a good one: [FinAid | Calculators | Award Letter Comparison Tool](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Award Letter Requirements - Finaid)

If you talk to them and thoroughly explain why want to go there I believe they’ll understand. They really just want you to be happy and it’s not like Wesleyan is anything to be ashamed about.

Wesleyan carries no less prestige than Cornell. While the term “Ivy League” may carry a lot of weight to the general public, future employers/graduate schools will not take another applicant over you simply because they graduated from Cornell and you Wesleyan.
