So currently I am a Freshman and am studying criminal justice. I really want to purse a career with the government, like for example FBI, CIA or even being a US Marshall anything really along those lines. I definitely love studying criminal justice but I’m not sure getting a bachelors degree in it is the right move. I read on their websites that if you possess a Computer Science degree that it makes you essentially a better candidate for the position. So my question is should I stick with my major (Criminal justice, behavior and law studies) and minor in computer or vice versa?
The CS jobs are going to be a completely different kind of job than the ones a criminal justice major prepares you for. Do you like computer courses? CS is a tough major if you aren’t really into it… I do think minoring or taking some classes in it alongside a criminal justice major might be a good plan. But if you don’t really have an itch to work in the computer field, I wouldn’t switch to the major for that reason.
Those government agencies employ in a lot of different fields. Right now they’re looking for computer science majors for cybersecurity reasons. You wouldn’t be working “in the field” if you go that route. The ones who do that are often ex-military or have other previous training.
What kind of job do you actually want to have? Regardless of the employer.
I think it would be helpful to take some computer courses as an elective. I was once on a jury and you could tell the defense lawyers didn’t know anything about computers and it did not help their case.
