I am a 2011 graduating senior. I received my status update on BAL and was not admitted into Mccombs.I did get my second choice, ColA:Economics major. I was really surprised. My dilemma is that UT was my choice solely because I wanted a business degree and after careful research by my parents and myself,UT was it. Location was everything as my mother had a stroke in 2009 and I didn't want to leave the state. I was auto-admitted to UT,top 3.25% , 3.7 GPA and had gone to a summer program there for the business school(ACAP).That sealed the deal for me. I loved it. I had also applied to the Bauer School of Business/University of Houston, scholarship eligible,Mays school of Business,Texas AM,Baylor and Rice University. I was accepted to all of them. My mother feels that if I did not get into Mccombs, why bother with UT. She feels that I can get a good education with a LA degree at the other schools I was accepted to.Why don't I take my talents elsewhere she says. So that's the problem. What shall I do?
Is it realistic to think that I can still get into Mccombs as an internal transfer CoLA:Econ>Mccombs or shall I follow another route. LMK.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

BTW. my admission status on Be A Longhorn(BAL) says :

First Choice School-Major: McCombs School Of Business
Unspecified Business (Freshman)
Bachelors
Second Major Choice: College Of Liberal Arts
Economics

Applicant UT EID: ****** -- Please include this EID on all correspondence sent to the University.

Congratulations! You have been admitted to your second-choice major in the College Of Liberal Arts ( Economics ) at UT Austin. Discover more about your admission and find out what to do next to begin your Longhorn experience

Search through this forum, with key words: Internal transfer mccombs. There are LOADS of experiences from others who were in your position, transferred from econ to UT, and were accepted. BTW, by Rice, do you mean economics? I don’t think they have an undergraduate business program.

My test scores were not as good as I thought. To be frank. I still try to find ways to go higher even though I’m finished with that stage of college admissions.I actually took SATtwice to get a better score SAT:2080 My EC’s were just average, maybe sub par to most. I played Tennis.I am a tutor to the underserved elementary kids n my community.I have assisted post stroke victims with house chores/errands on the weekends for the last two years since my mother suffered a stroke. I also provide homework assistance to children in a low income apartment property. My aunt is the property manager and she created the opportunity for me a couple of years ago. I do this and am still able to handle up on my studies. That’s all I have time for.

I applied as an international student to McCombs too. Sincerely, i think my position will be similar to yours. Getting into McCombs directly is really, really hard. However, as an internal transfer is a lot easier. I already checked, and 78% of applicants as transfers from coLA to McCombs get accepted. A friend of mine, graduated from Exeter, applied to McCombs and wasn’t accepted neither. However he is at coLA right now and he will apply to transfer this year. He told me you just need to take calculus I & II, microeconomics and macroeconomics and you can apply with those credits to McCombs. Of all the schools you applied to, I will said McCombs is the best business school. So, i think a year in coLA can be a great experience and then if you apply to McCombs I think you will have a great shot. Hope to see you in Austin next year!

Thanks for the speedy responses from you all. I guess I’m trying to ask do I still attend UT if I didn’t get into Mccombs. That was my sole reason for going, it’s business school rankings. Now if the internal transfer into Mccombs is something tangible, hook’em horns. No I don’t want to go to UT just because of the name. I can go to Rice but I didn’t like the feel of Rice.Yes ,I fit into the academic setting but I would need a diversion from all that, too.UT seemed to fit the bill. So please help me to decide.

If you REALLY want UT that badly and are willing to do whatever it takes, go for it! You will always wonder what could have happened if you don’t try. If your grades are good, you can still transfer to one of the other schools if the transfer into McCombs doesn’t work out. The odds are in your favor - sometimes you just have to follow your dreams.

You said: ‘‘Yes ,I fit into the academic setting but I would need a diversion from all that, too.UT seemed to fit the bill. So please help me to decide.’’

I think I understand you pretty much, I love school and by saying I love school, I mean i love learning new things each day a having great classes. But also i love parties, hanging out with friends and all that stuff… as far as i am concerned ut austin provides both things… great school and great social life… its a great choice

Though I’m no party girl, Noka1993… .Here is my nail and you’ve got the hammer You" hit the nail on the head."That’s it. The best of both worlds. I was okay with going anywhere. I was an owl (RICE)for life until I visited UT for a week long summer business camp. Thanks again for your replies

I was an owl for life until I visited UT for a week during a business camp.I take education and learning very seriously but I felt something missing at Rice. I really don’t want to have regrets.Well, not too many. I like the way you put itin your reply and I would always wonder what could have happened if I did not try. Thanks again.

I got an interview from BHP and the guy said he was going to give me ‘outstanding remarks’, however I checked my EID and it appears that I was accpeted into my second choice major. After speaking with BHP reps they informed me that those who get an interview for BHP must have already been admitted into McCombs, and were confused by my question to them. Any one have some insight for me? Anyone have the same problem or at least accepted into BHP/McCombs and if youve had an interview yet?

At least you are in UT. From here on in, it’s about what you do when you get there. I go to a really competitive high school, so I did not make top 8% for UT (very close) much less top 2-3% for McCombs. My ACT is 35, GPA is 4.12, tons of EC’s. I’ve been accepted at a couple of other top ten schools so far, but really want to go to UT (odd that I can get in to those schools but not UT, huh?) I just keep waiting to hear like everyone else. I might end up in the same place you are - in UT, but not McCombs - so I’ll keep watching to see what you decide. I know what you mean about Rice. Very good school, but not the right fit for me. I want a more traditional college experience with sports and a more diverse group of people (even if most of them are from Texas - it’s a big state!) Good luck - if I were you, I’d go for it. You might even find something you like even better than business or want to do undergrad in one subject then go for an MBA. Fate is funny.

I’ve got a lot of deciding to do ,too. And it’s a tough decision for me.I’ll definitely keep you (CC) posted.I’m glad that I have choices but getting into Mccombs was a major deciding factor for me choosing UT. Like I said I’ve got some serious thinking to do.

Whoever told you that was incorrect hoboman–getting an interview with BHP just means that a staff member said “yes” to your file and you moved into final review. McCombs and BHP have two completely different admissions systems, and you can be denied to one or the other or both separately. I’m sorry someone told you incorrect information, that’s unfortunate.
