Help! I need sports schools w/ strong academics in the west!

Hey everyone!

Im new to this site, but Ive just started my college search and I though you’all could help me.

I’m really looking for a school with a big time sports program. When a fall football Saturday comes along, I want the town to rise and come alive in their school’s colors.

I really want to stay on the west coast… I live in Arizona. My dream school is USC, and Washington is also on my list.

So I really want a big time sports school, but also with a solid academic reputation.

I don’t know, I guess I just have a certain vision for the school that I want to go to . I like traditional campuses, and where everyone in the town loves the school and the sports teams.

I’m a huge sports guy.. if you cant tell…… and I need a school where others share my passion.

So I guess Im just asking for some suggestions…

Im a pretty smart student… 3.98 weighted GPA … 1910 Sat ( 1290) 28 act

Right now my list is USC and Washington

Im open to schools in California, Oregon, Washington, Colorado… and other western schools…. ( out of Arizona) (((( No Ucla or UCB)))))

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

ucd,unlv,uw-wash(you are in),oregon..

UNLV is a commuter school, and the only really strong programs are hospitality-related.

UC Davis could be good though. Gonzaga, perhaps? I hear that football is pretty huge there.

I remember UC Davis used to have night football games, so it was the place to be Saturday nights. Now that they are Div I all bets are off though.

Fresno State is a big football/sports school. (And it could be a very safe safety.) University of Santa Clara also is sports oriented.

When I saw this post, I immediately thought of USC. With your scores, I think USC would be something like a high match.

I'm not sure if the OP is really competitive enough for UCs out of state, but that could be just my perception.

Basically, here are all the major Division I football schools out west (except for UCLA, Cal and Stanford, and the AZ schools):
Washington
Wash St.
Oregon
Oregon St.
USC
Boise St.
Fresno St.
Hawaii
Nevada
Utah
Wyoming
Colorado
Colorado St.
San Diego St.

There are a few others I left out, like Air Force, BYU, UNM, and NMSU, but overall there just aren't many major athletic programs out west, compared to the midwest and east. Really, I would say that your best bets for combining academics and school spirit are USC, Washington, Oregon, Utah, and Colorado. Of those 5 choices, I would say that Oregon is actually the most like a traditional college town atmosphere, where the whole city is focused on the sporting events. Plus, they have a boatload of Nike money and fantastic facilities in Eugene.
