HELP! I want to cry...

Okay so I am taking a Kaplan P/SAT prep class this summer and the first class we had they gave us a practice SAT to take. Now this was my FIRST ever full length SAT that I ever took, without a calculator (mine broke 2 seconds before the beginning of the test - and i am saying this because I use a calculator religiously and without it I was unnatuarally slowed down) and this was all near 9 at night, where maybe I wasn't really thinking that straight or I don't know what. Nevertheless, I got a 1580......
I knew I didn't do well because I didn't really bother to go over answers and I didn't know how to write the essay part and so on.
I'm not trying to make excuses - I'm just asking if since this was the first ever practice test, is it still possible for me to really study and practice and still get like a 2000-2100 something? I (and especially my parents) was really disappointed and I was just wondering if anyone else had taken their first SAT, studied and did a ton better after. Thanks!

When I first took my SATs (years and years ago) I was told that my school on the second attempt would not increase significantly from the first. I am not sure if I was nervous on the first attempt but I was really disappointed in my performance. So much so that I retook the test and did much better the second time, which I attribute to knowing what to except and went in a more relaxed mode.

With your calculator woes and other issues I can imagine that it could have been unnerving. It is likely you will do better the second round.

I guess it depends on how much you felt like the "conditions" (no calculator, etc.) actually affected you. Now there's no positive way to say this, but 1580 is a pretty low score. You'll definitely improve with practice, but I'd be surprised if the score you ultimately send to colleges is in the 2000-2100 range.

first time I took the sat w/ my pr class i got a 1480. Then after the class and my own hard work, I pulled for a 2140. Im gonna retake it for 2200. So i think that you can do it.

ok that makes me feel a lot better - just knowing someone was in the same boat as me
i am planning (already started) to work my butt off to grasp all these concepts and do better and better, and its nice knowing someone has already accomplished that
Thanks :)

It's just a practice test, and not even an official CB one. If it makes you feel any better, I got a 158 on the PSAT and now I'm at a 1830 on the SAT. I didn't study for either so I'm studying the whole summer and seeing what happens in October.

I got a 167 on PSAT and i got my SAT score up to a 2100 on my first real SAT try. I did 3 full practice tests before i actually took it and studied thought.
Don't sit on CC worrying....go and study!! you can do it!

asya800: You *can *raise your score. The first thing to do is wipe away your tears. :) The second thing is analyze why you missed certain problems (algebra, double passages, ect). Then you can go on the other SAT related forums on CC and ask about strategies. My guess is that you haven't seen the test enough. Take practice tests. Tons of practice tests. In the end, the SAT is written by the same people. If you see enough tests, you'll begin to think in their pattern. Once that happens, you'll be getting a lot more answers right. But the most important thing is to look back at what you missed. If you don't you'll just keep missing them. Also, try skipping more. It will help tons.

some practice tests can be horribly inaccurate. i went to some free tutoring class because my mom forced me and they gave me a practice test that i got an 1170/1600 and a 1650/2400. now this was after i got 1390/1600 and 2060/2400 on the real SAT... so i dunno it could have just been a wack test

i didnt read all of what you said because you started to ramble on about calculators and started crying and etc. kaplan sucks big time and their tests arent related to the real thing. i cant believe i paid 900 dollars for it, such a waste of money

here I have a tissue for ya :)
I think I'm in the same situation as you. Recently I spend 6hours/day studying at library
don't know how efficient it is but try my best :|
